Hey Ron,

I noticed you said something about TJs and Whole Foods having fertile eggs in your shipping thread. No one ever seems to mention other grocery stores that carry fertile eggs. Our Raley's has been carrying fertile eggs for about a year now. The information isn't much good for people outside Northern CA, though. They are the Barn Star "Free Roaming" California grown brown eggs.

Has anyone tried hatching those before?

Does anyone else know of other stores that are now carrying fertile eggs?

One of my Orpingtons Laid a 3.2 oz egg today...it was a double yoke ...the yokes were huge. YUMMY!

Beautiful eggs Molly.

My girls have really kicked it up too. I've been getting 3+ dozen every day, plus a dozen quail. My CL are starting to lay nearly every day and that egg is so blue it possitively glows in the collection bucket amongst the rest. The problem is, there are around 8 from the egg girls, the rest I view as possible chicks and it's hard to eat them. But what do you do, I get 10-12 every day from the golden campine. They are our main eating egg and one of my best show birds!

I've hatched the TJ eggs and got 8 chicks out of the dozen. Do the Barn Star eggs say fertile or just free roaming? It's not the same thing. I did hatch some "cage free" eggs from the local food co-op on the chance they had a roo. I didn't figure I could lose too much for $4.95, I did have one egg hatch. Of course it was a roo, LOL

I think it depends on store locations. The Safeway in Novato carries fertile eggs (Judy's), but the one in Tahoe doesn't. I imagine not all Raley's carry them. I think people just need to go to their local store and see if they carry fertile eggs and ask if people have had experience with a particular brand. I have seen fertile eggs in my local stores from Clover, Judys and Petaluma Poultry (AKA Rock Island). Petaluma Poultry and Clover farms are within an hour from my hour so I expect the eggs to be fresher than eggs purchased at other stores, but perhaps not. They all may go to the same dist center first. I don't recall seeing Barn Star but it is certainly possible.

BTW, has anyone kept track of the male/female ratio on store bought eggs? I find I hatch more roosters with shipped eggs so I am curious what the ratio is when they are bleached, washed, shipped and chilled. My guess...... tough buggers

BTW, has anyone kept track of the male/female ratio on store bought eggs? I find I hatch more roosters with shipped eggs so I am curious what the ratio is when they are bleached, washed, shipped and chilled. My guess...... tough buggers

I've only done store eggs once for fun. The one chick (from an obviously Marans egg) was a boy. The TJ chicks sold immediately to a family that wanted a white egg layer. They planned to eat any boys (they were an old school immigrant family and had no problem with that idea).
