California - Northern

Oh, yeah, back to chickens........

Um, I left the coop door open and a family of bobcats wiped out my boys' RIR and Bantam Wyandotte show birds

. An extremely rare and stupid occurrence on my part but devastating noen the less. (the Sumatras moved their roost from 10ft up a walnut tree to 15ft up - so they were spared)

My youngest still has one little survivor hen whose praises he sings every time he comes in from doing chores. I need to replace the roo he lost asap. Can anyone give me any leads? He would be showing it at our fair and poultry show and hatching chicks to sell and show. So, it should be a nice, show quality, White Bantam Wyandotte cockerel/roo. Any leads would be much appreciated. :)

She was a show prospect when we bought her, but I just never got myself back out there (I showed dogs for 35+ years in the past). I thought about showing again, but just decided to enjoy her at home. Now it's a moot point, we fought happy tail syndrome with her for almost 2 years, we recently gave up and had her tail docked. It was starting to look like the infection might spread to the bone and I just couldn't justify keeping her on antibiotics so often. Our house looked like a CSI crime scene with even blood sprays on the ceiling. I wrapped her tail twice a day all that time. I have to admit, it's so much easier now with her tail gone.

Awww. I hear ya. I would have done the same thing.

Hey Ron,

I noticed you said something about TJs and Whole Foods having fertile eggs in your shipping thread. No one ever seems to mention other grocery stores that carry fertile eggs. Our Raley's has been carrying fertile eggs for about a year now. The information isn't much good for people outside Northern CA, though. They are the Barn Star "Free Roaming" California grown brown eggs.

Has anyone tried hatching those before?

Does anyone else know of other stores that are now carrying fertile eggs?

From the posts that I have read, TJs has better success. They also hatch a breed and not a hybrid. It looks like the whole foods chicks might be production reds but they might be Austra Whites. Most of the brown eggs come from Sex links, so the chicks hatched are not as good as the parents.

It would be fun to try hatching them. I will have to check the stores here and see what they have. There is a thread focused on hatching Store eggs. It is fun to read it.

On a quest for Speckled Sussex, Partridge Rocks, California Greys, Delawares and Easter Eggers would like to get all chicks within a week of each other but am willing to hit multiple spots. The EEs and the SS are the most highly desired on my list.

Any of you Mendocino County peeps buy your chicks in Ukiah? Rainbow Ag Orders from Ideal, TSC orders from McMurray and I don't know where Medocino Farm Supply orders from but was wondering if you had any knowledge or reviews. I am looking for someone to include a special order with their store order if neccessary.

How about Northern Sonoma County? I have no experience with these either. Our Rainbow Ag won't special order and the chicks I want won't be coming in at the same time

Ron I hope your eggs are still viable! since I followed your advice about canceling my order with MM I have read on hear about loads of people who have lost all or part of their MM shipment. Hence my feed store scavenger hunt

Oh and I am quite envious of you with incubators...hoping to have natural incubators in the form of broody hens this time next year so I can get started exploring that end of chicken fun

Good Luck with all of your hatches and your new babies!

Thanks for any information you have for me.

. I think

Welcome! It's nice to see another mendo-person!

I've bought chicks from Rainbow Ag before, they usually have a good variety. And I asked them to special order some geese last year - they were happy to do that. Unfortunately, the hatchery mixed up the order & sent Africans instead of Toulouse. I went ahead & took them anyway, cuz a goose is a goose, right? Umm. So they got really mean, and then they got cooked. Mighty tasty.

I was just thinking about checking the local organic food store for fertile eggs to throw in the incubator. I just started baking a few eggs yesterday, & there's room in the bator for a few more. Can't let that extra space go to waste...
