Welcome to the new faces around here! I still get excited to meet chicken people that luve around me. You guys help convince myself im not the only one with a chicken addiction around Lol :D

I think im out of the Basque business. A nice lady in Indiana is interested in buying my flock of Basques. So they might be taking a trip soon. Its not official yet. But im rethinking my chicken collection motives. I really have an affliction for Those round fulffy English Orpingtons!!

So far i only have a few colors. But i am talking with some really helpful people to try and import some really cool new colors!!! I would really love to have pens with different colors of these birds!!

Just wanted to share some "going on" news.

Amy i just want to say you are such a good mommy for nursing that poor chick like that. I hope she has a quick recovery and be around next year to win a calendar award!!! That would be a really great story.

Just wanted to say Hi to everybody! Hope everyone is in good spirits and feeling 25 years young
! :P

Coop building has started! Yeah! It will be a coop/run combo. 12'x6' with the coop portion being 1/3 of the structure at 4'x6'. Front wall is 7' tall and back is 6'. It looks super tall because of the extra 18" of block in the front. The hens will have a view of Mt. Shasta.

First hole being dug.

Day 1 (Feb 3, 2013): Dug eight holes. Put in sonotubes. Mixed and poured concrete into tubes. Set metal post brackets in wet concrete. Covered them up with multiple layers of cardboard/blankets/etc and a tarp over it all to prevent the concrete from freezing before it had time to set.

Day 2 (Feb 9, 2013): Dug down about 6-8" between concrete. Leveled the bottom of the trench with sand and set concrete blocks all around to get a level perimeter. Front is about 18" higher than the back over 6' distance.

End of second day.

Day 3 (Feb 10, 2013): Framed up main structure in garage. Predrilled and precut everything. Moved the front and back walls separately and then started attaching the rafters. Attached plywood and tar paper. Then mocked up the tin roof. It isn't attached yet. Just held on with clamps for the moment. Since it is used roofing that was a find, it needs to come down to have my husband do his metal magic to fix the holes.

Mock up in the garage.

Plywood going on roof.

End of third day.

I am thinking at the rate we're going that we might actually be done by the time the eggs get here on the 20th. If not, then soon after.

What do you guys think?

Rachel
Looks great!!! Congrats.

Thank
It is hard to tell with chickens and you are wise to notice her change in behavior. Hens laying eggs is a good sign since egg laying takes a lot of energy. How is the egg? If it is thin shelled, has changed in shape or if she sometimes lays and odd shaped one then there could be a problem.

Another indication of health Is if she rushes out of the coop in the morning to get treats. It might not be a bad idea to check her out at night with a flashlight. I like the head lamps. Look for foot problems and check for swelling. Check the vent to make sure there are no bugs too.

She could just be acting weird though. My Blue Marans is a crazy thing. She still figures out how to get over the chicken fence into the back yard and then she lays her egg anywhere. It's been a couple of days since I got an egg from her, so I was searching for a new hiding place for her eggs last night. I will have to look more when I get home. I may also need to clip one of her wings. I also had a BR in the nest box last night and she looks a bit skinny. She is a Hatchery bird and is just over two years old so she could go at any time. The Atstralorps are still crazy healthy at 2 years old and the one Golden Comet that is 2.5 years old still lays an egg nearly every day. She is big and healthy too.

I hope yours is fine!
thank you! I think she's fine; just a little awkward on the high bars:) she's roosting every night now & she lays every day:) huge eggs, too ! I checked all of them tonight & they all look good... Only concern is diarrhea. I have noticed a few of them having runny almost liquid stools. I have been giving plain yogurt, buttermilk & oats the last two days. I also puts one garlic in their water. Anything else I can do? I stopped the table scraps for now. All 5 are eating, acting normal & only one hasn't layed in 4 days. She doesn't seem to have diarrhea though. Are they just getting used to their new flora? P.S. I have my 1st two chicks scheduled to hatch tomorrow !!!!! I sure hope they do!
