California - Northern

Had to run into town to pick up dog food at 3:00 today, when I got back and looked at the thermometer on the bator it was down to 80° at 5:30. Someone tripped the GFIC and it had been without power while I was gone. I've got it back up to 98° now, hope I caught it in time, they have looked pretty strong up to this point. Time will tell.

Went out this morning to see if the partridge was still on the eggs I left her with last night, found a BSL on duty instead so I pulled the eggs. I'm sure they will start up soon enough.

Most likely the worst thing will be a delayed hatch. Leave it alone for two days and then candle.

Super cute! What is it that you are using as a nest box?
When we moved in a couple years ago there were these old containers that you put dog food in? We set these aside for the garbage. Well on a whim I put one in the duck coop and 1 in the chicken coop...they are THE most used lay box of the coops. The ducks almost exclusively lay in that one in their coop and before Betty took over the chicken coop's one- most of the pullets laid their eggs in that one too. I thought I'd buy some more...Petco for like $45...ummm...maybe not but the birds seriously love them.

The Dorkings are developing very nicely. There were only about 5 that were not obvious. The Delawares are harder because of the shell--Thicker and darker and some are speckled. Even so, I did see some ghost veins and the darkness that developing eggs get. I will know more in a couple of days or soon.

A person one the Easter Hatch thread has Delawares that lay jumbo eggs. They are from a Hatchery and are mean though. It is great to hear that you have a nice one!

Man I need get one of those candlers one day. Using flashlights on duck eggs works fine. But on tinted eggs? Bah!

The Blue Egg layer sage continues! The one I found still in the shell with now pip stayed in the incubator over night and perked up nicely! First thing in the morning I checked on the 6 outside and found one cold outside of the ecoglow. I guess they are smaller than most of the ones I hatch. It was cold but its eyes were kind of looking at me, so I put it into the incubator with the last chick to hatch. I took one side off of the ecoglow so that the chicks could make better contact and later set up the big light for them. The almost dead one was fine and back to normal in a couple of hours and is now back with the others. They are all doing fine and I have Four Blue ones and 3 Splash ones: I am off to get them some Chick vitamins and plain yogurt!
Thanks for posting! The little blues are dreamy!
What I am working on for Jeff :)
Stunning, as always! He is lucky to have found you! What a way to showcase his birds!

Quote: They are Araucana x leghorns and were an experiment by a friend of a Professor at the University of Arkansas. The are much more Docile than I expected but the hatch two times ago was for Cream Legbars X Crele Penedesencas. They do think I am going to kill them each time I walk by....
