California - Northern

Morning !! I'm on day 20 with 5 EE's!!! Had some temp fluctuations & I haven't candled at all!! Hoping for the best!!
Question: how early can you clip wings? My 3 week old chick who's a suspect roo had roosted on top of the brooder all night! Lol. Don't want to clip too soon.
Congrats, Ron!
Awesome coops, Deb!! Super jealous!!!

You only clip one wing!

You can clip now, but you will have to clip again soon--Juvenile molt is still coming and then the feathers will grow back in.

You clip one wing because they can still manage to fly with two short wings. Also, they often use the wings for balance as they jump up stuff to get to that high perch they want. One wing clipped messes up their balance and they do not fly.

Thanks Elite but I was just kiddin'.

I've got enough irons in the fire without adding more. Broody nursery to finish up, duck pen to build, 4-H field day next weekend, Still working on which birds going to Red Bluff..........

You are in the Yreka area correct? I get asked all the time for POL birds. Would you like me to refer them to you? I-5 chicken exchange.

I just got back home. I dont live far. I can meet you back up there if you are headed out there.
I took 10 laying hens. $20ea and sold them all within 15 minutes. I was thinking about loading back up and heading back up there....
Good luck with your hatch!

I was wondering the same thing about how young can you clip wings.
I honestly have no idea what might happen with these eggs!

I posted a video to Vimeo this morning--Still have 30 min. to editing so for now here is a picture of one Bresse. This is the type of pose that makes my daughters think the chicks are dead:

This one hatched yesterday afternoon! Why nap on the old egg shell?

Ron, do you know if Bresse tend to be flighty? The trio that I got all have a clipped wing. They sure do remind me of white leghorns with blue legs!

Thanks, Ron! I've clipped 7 hens so far, but they were all older & yes, only one side :) Glad to know I can do it now without bleeding. Did you ever see the pics I posted of their combs? Wondering what you think.

So far the pullet I have does not seem to be particularly flighty. She is calmer than the CCL x CP(Crested Cream Legbar X Crele Penedesenca) those guys are crazy and they do seem to fly well.

My guess is that they will not fly too much when they start getting big. Some people just clip the wing. Luckily the person you got yours from does not trim the Beak. I do not like that one.

They are supposed to be crazy Foragers. In France they only forage for the first several months and then they are penned and eat that special diet they give them. My little pullet does not seem to forage better than the others so far.
