Quote: LOL, you asked the million dollar question. Some are shipped eggs so not all will develop, some will be roosters, like my chicken math skills? I have 13 chicks in the brooder right now too.
I'm hatching a lot of welsummers, because I'm planning on replacing some of my breeder stock. I had a couple wellie girls go broody last year. (wellies are terrible setters and mothers) It's not a trait for wellies and one I don't want in my flock. (have other breeds for broodies) Plus a couple of them don't lay as dark as I'd like. And my oldest hen is no longer laying. Soooo, I need to grow out a bunch to have a good number to choose from. I will cull the non keepers to friends houses as layers, or sell them. I'd also like to keep a son from my rooster from one of my newer pullets that lays a nice, dark egg. My rooster is getting up there in age, he's 3 1/2, so I need another "just in case".
Then, I had a terrible year with my barnevelders. I've got some blues growing out, but lost both of my pure cockerels I was growing out (to bad luck, nothing disease wise). So I'm hatching some more pures and a few blues too while I'm at it. I need to build up my stock with them.
Then I have some olive eggers that I wanted to hatch from my flock. A couple black sex links from my BR/Welsummer. They are fertile, so what the heck, I've already got the bator out.
Short answer, huh?
Just want to share some egg pics from this past week. My Langshan girls (except for 2 special ones) are all headed to the farm tonight to join the boys. I am so sad that I won't be able to look out my back door and see them. But I do want Langshan babies so have to get the boys and girls together for that to happen!
Darker brown eggs are Langshan eggs and the lighter 3 in the center are Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock eggs
Blue eggs left to right: Cream Legbar, Blue Wheaten Ameraucana, Lavender Ameraucana, Lav Am, and the little fart egg is from my Silver AM, I think!
This is the largest egg (89 g) and the smallest egg (9 g) that my girls have ever given me.
They were laid the same day. The large double yolker is from my Blue Langshan who is still walking like a penguin. She must have some major problems with her reproductive tract. She is eating well and laying so I'm just keeping an eye on her. The little blue egg is from my tiny Silver AM, I think.
Beautiful eggs! Love the tray they are on too! Good luck with your Langshan girl.
Balthazar is still with us. He seems a bit more lively today, but I'm not sure how much of that is wishful thinking. (He has suet-type treat on his beak)
Our Sultan baby. She hates me. A lot.
Cotton is really the only sweet one of the Polish we picked up.
Love his/her blue legs. They're all getting nice real feathers on top of their heads.
This one always looks that grumpy.
Adorable babies. And LOL on the Sultan.
