California - Northern

Not sure if you were talking to me, but if you were, I would love to do lunch! We're going tp be there next Tuesday. If that doesn't work we can go again sometime, that's where Mark works. If you were talking to someone else let's just push past the embarrassment and talk more about chickies.

You know, I'm really not sure if Balthazar is small - what breed would be comparable in size to a Favorolle? He's bigger than our Partridge Rock chicks, but smaller than the Buff Orps and RIRs. And thank you! We love him. He was kinda wiley last night, standing on the eggs and getting a few bites for himself. And thank you ChickNMama and Ron. I will prepare some moistened food for her. I'm kind of relieved to hear you say that about force feeding, not my style. Glad we don't have to go through that. I did mix some egg yolk (boiled last night) with water and I think she may have got a bite or two. I just kind of wiped it on her beak. She actually woke up a little after that. She's good about drinking the Save-a-chick still.
Yes! I don't know what my schedule is next week, we have 2 maybes pending for next week.

Quote: In my first life (seems that long ago, LOL), I spent many years working in tropical fish stores. We used potassium permanganate all the time as a dip to treat fish for parasites. You'd mix up quite a strong solution of it, and just net dip the fish a few times, once a day for a few days. It would kill any external parasites and did no harm to quite delicate fish.
It's good to know that fish can tolerate it. I got freaked out from the hazard warnings.

My 2 Marans OEs are second generation from Wynette and the one that lays olive eggs lays more of an khaki/army green egg. The other one has a straight comb and lays a Marans dk brown egg. Here is a pic of their eggs:

Those are beautiful. The khaki is really neat. My wish list just got longer again!

I should have said I have all shades of brown from beige to dark brown lol. I need green, blue, olive, etc :)

You totally need eggs! I can make you a crazy colors special. Lt green, dark brown, blue. I have olive chicks but the marans are mostly pure now and olive isn't laying. I vote you get an incubator.

You know, I should do an egg basket special of chicks once I start getting smooth hatching, that would be fun. Olive, why do you foil my plans???
( foil my plans, not film my plans. A chicken filming the smoker bator giving a running commentary in chickenesse would be worth seeing)

I'm hoping that it's just me being impatient after the worming. I asked Dawg who recommended feeding only layer pellets for a week (no treats!

) and that may be helping. About 5 good looking poops under the roosts this morning, so almost halfway there! Everything was the same from Nov on before the diarrhea started at the end of Jan, so don't think it was green grass. We did let them gorge on earthworms up at the garden, which I have since found out can be carriers for a few types of parasitic worms. Not that I would prevent the girls from eating worms in the future, maybe just not so many at once! They are off the DE for the time being, but maybe I should start it back up (was worried it might interfere with any healing

). While reading about Denagard, I ran across intestinal spirochetosis and this may be what the problem is. People and other animals get i.s., and chickens get it too. Explains the excessive drinking and the runs, but still being active and eating, although reduced laying. Have to read more.

Denagard targets the pathogen for this, so better that than wiping them clean with epsom salts. The EE seemed less 'juicy' today, and they drank much less water this morning. Much closer to normal. Still getting the Denagard, just in case.

Your avatar pic is beautiful. Porcelain d'Anvers?

Sounds like your chickens are on their way to getting better

Denegard is a great medication to have on hand.

Yes, the pullet in my Avatar is a porcelain d'Anver. She is the one that hatched as a star gazer and is SUPER friendly! She follows me all over and wants to be held and petted. I love this breed, so I have ordered hatching eggs from Boggy Bottom Bantams. His porcelains need to pick up their laying, so I am on his waiting list. Audrey said it would be soon though

This is a breed that would do well with your Seramas (they are the size of a dove) and so lovable! I know your boys would love them.

I know I want an incubator but I'm scared of screwing it up and killing all the eggs it sounds complicated

Oh, the enabling that happens on this thread!

I was already thinking it might be fun to have other bantams, and the d'Anvers look like little Ams, with the beards/muffs.

The porcelain color is fantastic. Sounds like an excellent idea! I was even thinking about <gulp> a Silkie hen, especially a broody one. I much prefer the idea of a feathered incubator over an electric one!

There is a learning curve for all incubators, but it is not terribly hard. They key is to have it in a place that is safe, keeps a vaugly stable temperture, and have decent equipment. And know no all your eggs will match and don't stress. ( unless you get a brinsea, those things will hatch golf balls into mini clubs)

Orlando, my cream leg bar too just came to dace at the back door. He is telling you to have his babies! If only I had my camera.....

Warning!!! Warning!!!!
Silkie hens are addictive. ( if you are going to have them in a mixed coop get ones without vaulted sculls.) Showgirls doubly so!
