I am surprised and happy to report little invalid chick is still alive. She actually walked around and peeped loudly a few times during the night. I thought for sure I'd wake up to her having passed on :( My daughter gave her one of her stuffed animals to cuddle (and it's filled with rice, so it actually retains a bit of heat, but not too much. Kind of cool.) and we put a mirror in the box. She definitely seemed lonely. So these are my questions:

-Force feeding... (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/599275/weak-chick-responding-well-to-force-feeding/10) yes or no? She's drinking water but I have had a hard time getting her to eat anything. As in, she tries to peck at crumbles I've mortar and pestled into crumbs, but I don't think she gets any. And she didn't do anything with the egg yolk last night.

-There were several other small bantams in the pen at the feed store. I thought if she started improving I would go get her a buddy. She seemed stronger last night but is still very weak (back in the bandanna and just sleeping). However, she was obviously very lonely last night. Should I go back and get 2 bantams, so if she dies they still have company (and because I imagine she'll be with me, not in the box, most of the day)? Should I wait until she recovers and then get her a friend, assuming they still have some? I could wait until 5pm or so and see how she is, I guess.

Thanks everyone!

Is anyone in the Sonoma County area going to be looking to expand their laying flock or interested in the polish I posted pictures of the other day? We don't need to rehome anyone right now, but we will eventually and I thought I'd slowly start looking. I know most of you on here are more into high quality birds (ours are from McMurray) but I would much rather have them go to someone on here than Craigslist. We would be trying to sell them (not really for profit, but we paid for them. You understand.)

Does anyone have any LF chicks for sale (fairly) near me? Thank you.
Is LF large fowl or laying flock or something else?

Still learning. I'm not sure where exactly you are, we're in Santa Rosa area and will be in Novato next week one day. We have an assortment of brown layers and polish, and we are looking to reduce our numbers a bit. The brown layers are almost three weeks and the polish are about 3.5 weeks.

I am a bit far from you. The ones I have now need to grow out to see what they are. I would hate to lose all of the pullets.

Congratulations on the little one! Sometimes they do not look like they are eating much. The water is the most important thing and getting her to eat a bit will slowly get her going.

Getting a friend will help her a bunch!

Good work keeping her alive, once they go down its usually difficult.

You might want to moisten the feed. I have found that sometimes it helps them eat. I would mix the water with the electrolites and a very small amount of apple cider vinegar, then mix a couple spoonfulls of that with some crumbles, just till its moist. When they peck at that its easier to eat - and some does get inside. I find force feeding to be traumatic for the bird, I lost every one I have ever tried that on.

I still have silver leghorns from Stockton show eggs. I have 2 more batches of olive eggers hopefully hatching this week and 10 days from now. I also have a few lighter green egger test and super ee ( cl roo and ee hens)

Marans will be pure again in about 6 days. But that means they won't be born for about a month. Its anti chicken math.

We should all have lunch in novato! ( I go there for work a lot)

Hey is Balthazar still small? He looks still a little like a ftt chick. If he continues to feather slowly keep him nice and warm and give him a little extra feed when you pamper him. They do really well if you let them use all their energy for growing. He is so cute!!

Also thanks for the compliments on my little ee eggs! They seem huge to me this year. That's what you get from rescuing easter birds off craigslist!

zooeemama: I am so sorry for all the worry you have had for your husband's health. Hope and pray that he continues to improve and that there will be an easy and permanent fix!

Ron those eggs are so pretty! I may be getting OE eggs in my hens choice mixed hatching eggs

Also maybe Marans...I am already intoxicated at what I might get....hope my hatch rate is decent I will post baby pics but I won't have any for 7 more weeks

Did a search for King Feed and found they sell it in Ukiah at Mendocino County Farm Supply so that's good news

Big Daddy's Mom My Australorps are gorgeous hunks of birdiness...I got them as day olds from MPC. They are not as friendly as my others ie they don't come into the house when we leave the door open like you see in my Avatar but they are very calm and put up with me picking them up without a fuss. Nothing like holding a warm black chicken on a cold morning :-) I will probably always have one for that reason and their looks. Plus mine lay golden brown eggs nearly every day. Are those your show girl pics! I hope her hatch is successful!

Miss Molly those babies are super cute....I may also have chocolate orpingtons in my shipped eggs :-)

LF??
