We should all have lunch in novato! ( I go there for work a lot)

Hey is Balthazar still small? He looks still a little like a ftt chick. If he continues to feather slowly keep him nice and warm and give him a little extra feed when you pamper him. They do really well if you let them use all their energy for growing. He is so cute!!
Not sure if you were talking to me, but if you were, I would love to do lunch! We're going tp be there next Tuesday. If that doesn't work we can go again sometime, that's where Mark works. If you were talking to someone else let's just push past the embarrassment and talk more about chickies.

You know, I'm really not sure if Balthazar is small - what breed would be comparable in size to a Favorolle? He's bigger than our Partridge Rock chicks, but smaller than the Buff Orps and RIRs. And thank you! We love him. He was kinda wiley last night, standing on the eggs and getting a few bites for himself.

And thank you ChickNMama and Ron. I will prepare some moistened food for her. I'm kind of relieved to hear you say that about force feeding, not my style. Glad we don't have to go through that. I did mix some egg yolk (boiled last night) with water and I think she may have got a bite or two. I just kind of wiped it on her beak. She actually woke up a little after that. She's good about drinking the Save-a-chick still.

I am also practicing reverse chicken math and am quite proud of myself. I had ordered 5 Delawares because I love mine so much but this morning I subbed them out for Partridge Rocks and cancelled my other PR order. I hope though that Kim has Delaware culls in late summer that I can mix take off her hands. So now instead of brooding 30 chicks I am brooding 25 ...plus the hatch, don't forget the hatch :-)

My husband the sweet enabler who has fallen nearly as hard for the birds as I have is on board for adding two additional pens.

Deeling: I am glad your little one is doing better. Good luck getting her to eat today.

My incubator is here!!!

It is unpacked and ready to be plugged in! The quail eggs aren't here yet so I may just put the eggs from chiqita in tonight.

My head hen is a 3 yr old hatchery black Australorp. She rules the roost even when I have cockerels running with the flock. She is not overly friendly to us but not unfriendly. I thought that she was a big bird until my 2 OE's and Langshans matured. Precious and her 2 enforcers can be firm with the lowest hens in the pecking order. I noticed when we had teenager cockerels in the flock, the big 3 were too busy keeping track of the boys to have time to pick on the other girls. Now that we are cockerel free (except for chicks), they are back to jumping the hens that are at the bottom.

zooeemama:  I am so sorry for all the worry you have had for your husband's health.  Hope and pray that he continues to improve and that there will be an easy and permanent fix!

Ron those eggs are so pretty!  I may be getting OE eggs in my hens choice mixed hatching eggs

Also maybe Marans...I am already intoxicated at what I might get....hope my hatch rate is decent I will post baby pics but I won't have any for 7 more weeks

Did a search for King Feed and found they sell it in Ukiah at Mendocino County Farm Supply so that's good news

Big Daddy's Mom My Australorps are gorgeous hunks of birdiness...I got them as day olds from MPC.  They are not as friendly as my others ie they don't come into the house when we leave the door open like you see in my Avatar but they are very calm and put up with me picking them up without a fuss.  Nothing like holding a warm black chicken on a cold morning :-)  I will probably always have one for that reason and their looks.  Plus mine lay golden brown eggs nearly every day. Are those your show girl pics!  I hope her hatch is successful!

Miss Molly those babies are super cute....I may also have chocolate orpingtons in my shipped eggs :-)

LF??

My first lead hen was an astrolorpe! Australian chickens ftw!
This fits both top and bottom quotes.

Something that will lay pretty colored eggs. All my girls lay is brown, brown, and beige.

Clearly you need buff and light beige!
