I'm getting the quail for eggs/meat. I have the perfect coop, but I need to know what the basics that I need are- dust bath (sand)? Regular feeders like use for my chickens? I know they need different food. What do they like to lay eggs in? My coop has a run with a little ladder leading up to a small enclosed roosting/ laying area, but I don't know what I need to get for them to lay in. Pretty sure I'm getting coturnix.*sigh* Since I am looking for a place to buy (a cheap place to buy) my options are somewhat limited, but I didn't want to have to go stealth again!!! Thank goodness GV is too far from my work for me to really consider it! Had a friend that did that with her dog. It was maybe a 5 pound dog and she lived in a condo and it really was a therapy pet for her after my dad died... long story. Anyway you always have crotchety neighbors that want to rain on your parade. SOooooo she is a nurse and has lots of doctor friends so it was really easy for her to get a note. It worked too! Not much they could do about it with her CC&R's either! HA! Take THAT you mean neighbors. The dog doesn't bark either. Not even a nuisance animal. Well yeah, when I was in Fairfield, I had 12 and was allowed 3, but they do make some noise and some neighbors are just bitter about life and want to rain on your parade! So, if I could tell them to buzz off because it is legal then it would make me happy and I could stress less. Ohhh I know me..... that is why since I had to get rid of my last chickens due to a move, all I have been thinking about is getting them back, plus some. EEeeee heeeee I don't have a DH anymore so I don't have to worry about giving anyone health problems.BUT you have the option!!! Options!!! It is all about options!!! Not restrictions! Yeah that would make me want to move too. Yeah, that is just so stressful. I would hate to have to go through that. I am trying to simplify life, and courts and arguments and all that stress me out. I am rather nonconfrontational. Lol Neener Neener..... I haven't heard that in a while!
Well I am really really new to quail, but I guess why do you want quail is a good place to start. I hear the button quail eggs are so small they are not really usable, or they are usable but most don't bother. I hear they are really cute though. I am trying to hatch my free Coturnix quail eggs as we speak, but only because they came free with my incubator. I probably would have gotten Jumbo's if I was going to pay for them. A little bigger eggs. I am not going to eat my quail, but others say they are really tasty. Chiquita seems to have a lot of quail experience and she has answered several of my hatching questions.![]()
OK, I have an exploded egg problem. It looks like one went boom under one of my broodies . Any idea how to clean the remaining eggs without killing them?
I'm zoned agricultural - so I can have up to 100 chickens on my property. My DH would have a coronary if I had that many, but I'm able to have them. Besides, with a couple of neighbors with dogs that bark CONSTANTLY (meaning all day long non stop - and no I'm not kidding), they'd better not complain about my roosters. Newsflash people, when your dog barks so much that it is hoarse, it's a problem. And I'm on 5 acres, so it's not like they are close.
I used to live in the city of Alameda. The next door neighbor's dogs barking at us while we were INSIDE our own home is what prompted us to buy our first home... without dogs next door!

Quote: I wonder who the seller is. They have a lot of great breeds, pack well and the White Bresse were very healthy. I need to add them to my favorite sellers list...
I hear a peep in the bator. Boy maybe I was off a day when I set them lol

Our Great Dane licks the feeder clean at every opportunity. We have to keep the door closed, she can aways reach them otherwise. So I found our cat in the brooder today eating... the chick's food!![]()
I would get eggs from someone here. You could bring in disease by borrowing a rooster. So I have a weird question, and I need advice. Since I can't have roosters, and want free/cheap hatching eggs, would a loner rooster work? Are chickens shy about "one night stands", or if I borrowed a rooster for a couple days, would he be able to get the job done? If I had a rooster for, say... 2 days, how long would the eggs be fertile?![]()
Quote: They are in for it now - I hatched 11 wellies and 8 are cockerels.
LOL, better than eating the chicks. So I found our cat in the brooder today eating... the chick's food!![]()
