Does anyone here have a preference between BSL and GSL?

Eric has desided we need more layers.  He wanted to add the BLRW's but with the amount of feed they eat I don't want to feed another 25 of them through the winter.  They do seem to get along in smaller spaces than the sexlinks.

If they were as calm as the first BSL we got that would be great.  The second BSL are terrible feather pickers and flighty.  I'm just hesitant to get another wild batch from Ideal.

We haven't had GSL yet so they are an unknown, I'm  not a big fan of Production Reds but I guess that's another option but they seem rather wild also.
What is GSL and BSL?

Well poop! Just home enjoying a nice evening with the doors open and then the power goes out and a loud pop somewhere outside....... My incubator dropped 6 degrees in 20 minutes.

I have it all wrapped up but they don't expect power back on until 10:30 if then. How long can eggs survive below temps?

They are quail eggs and I am on day 10.

Chiquita? Anyone any ideas? I mean really two power ourages in two days. The first one lasted maybe 2 hours yesterday. Didn't really have any outages all winter and now the weather is warmer the power is going out.

Between this being my first hatch ever and making various mistakes and now the power outages. I will be lucky to get any. And they were shipped eggs from somewhere frozen when they shipped and had shipping delays because of the weather.

We will see.

The Genesis is designed to run on 12 volts. Walmart has power bricks and you can plug it into the Cigarette lighter or power port as they call them now. I have a cable that plugs onto a battery to run my Genesis incubator(s).

Chicken eggs would be fine. with the time of cool down you are having. Chiqita know more about Quail.

Golden Sex Link and Black Sex Link. They are hybrids made by crossing two breeds that hatch Cockerels and Pullets that look different so that they you can tell gender at hatch.

This being BYC and keeper of chicken Knowledge, there is a thread that explains it very well!

Oh ok I need a cheat sheet for the abbreviations lol. My favorite and best layers are my black sex links I hatched

Well that is just plain cool! Thanks for the pics. I glazed over at the verbal description alone. :D. A little beyond my realm of understanding. But the pics make it almost doable for me! I have to figure out that safety net!

I love that sign! My husband says that if there is a job that you don't want to do, then do it poorly. If you are bad enough, no one will ask you to do it again! Yes, he really did do this at his previous job and it worked, he is an electrical engineer and hated making cables. Well, they asked him one time to make a cable set and never again!

I candled my eggs yesterday (I have 10 lavendar ameraucana, 2 orpingtons, and 12 "grocery" store eggs) and here's what I found: 13 looked good, 1 was a maybe, and the other 10 were either clear or had bloodrings. I pulled all the ones that looked bad out so now its just the 14 cooking away. I've been weighing them and the average weight loss is 8.5%. I think this is ok??? Anyway, I can't wait for this hatch! Day 21 for them will be next Saturday... it seems like FOREVER!!!

Strange question... do you all stay home for the hatch in case a chick needs assistance? I'm struggling with deciding to go on a 5 hr outing Sat afternoon but really feel like I should be here in case the chicks are hatching!!!

I wrote him and sent him a pictures, and offered to pay for shipping thinking this was the only way I would be able to get more eggs. He sent me more eggs, but I am almost 100% sure the replacement eggs were store bought eggs as they looked completely different from the first batch and had no bloom. As suspected, every since egg was clear with no sign of fertility. I did not even bother to write him again and wrote it off as a lesson learned.

It is surprising how easy it is to wrap and ship eggs. There really is no excuse for this kind of damage. What I find most interesting is that this breeder invested in a cooler, which could have been a great idea, but then neglected to protect the eggs.

The best shipping job I have ever seen is from James Meeks from Skyline. His style of packing is often referred to as the Meeks Method, and it really works. I adopted this method for shipping eggs and I know alot of other breeders have too.

If you are not familiar with the Meeks Method, James has a good description on his site at: skylinepoultry.com

Here are a couple of pictures I took of the way I roll my eggs. Once rolled, stand them up in the box big egg up. I can assure you, eggs arrived un-broken 99.9% of the time. Also, since the eggs are standing big end up there is little chance the air sack will break unless the PO plays football with the box.

Thats exactly how i wrap my eggs. Lots of bubble wrap and packing peanuts!
I havent any cracked eggs yet...

Pi Day Pie was very tasty

I try to stay away from the incubator. unless there are some really special eggs i want to make sure everything goes ok.

I have a problem with touching stuff. but thats just me. you might have better control.

Go on the trip!

It is best to stay away--It is better to leave them alone and let them hatch.
