California - Northern

I was tempted by Horstman breeds but after hearing his shipping methods were not good I desided against ordering.

When I ordered the BLRW's I chose the closest breeder, they were not that great either. 1/3 were infertile. Not much a broody can do with those eggs. The egg price was higher when I got to the site I could order them, shipping was more than quoted, took about a month to actually send the eggs even though the e-mails said they would be going out the first week. I quess nothings easy though is it?

I had a dozen Polish eggs not hatch from the same seller. However, when I reported it - he contacted me to ask - he offered me live chicks for the price of shipping. I accepted.

Six chicks sent, two died before they got out of the brooder BUT LF Polish can be difficult chicks to brood. I gave my best friend two and I kept two; we ended up with a pair apiece.

Pi Day Pie was very tasty

I might see if he will do that for me if the replacement shipping is a bust. Thanks for the idea!

Does anyone here have a preference between BSL and GSL?

Eric has desided we need more layers. He wanted to add the BLRW's but with the amount of feed they eat I don't want to feed another 25 of them through the winter. They do seem to get along in smaller spaces than the sexlinks.

If they were as calm as the first BSL we got that would be great. The second BSL are terrible feather pickers and flighty. I'm just hesitant to get another wild batch from Ideal.

We haven't had GSL yet so they are an unknown, I'm not a big fan of Production Reds but I guess that's another option but they seem rather wild also.

Yesterday on my jaunt, I picked up my last three (yes, three!) wine club selections from Bella Piazza Winery. I just haven't gone that way AND thought about 'em for months. Opened a bottle of Stellina last night and will finish it today and this evening, I think. The other five bottles will "rest" until I have company or another good reason to divest myself of them. Got a couple bottles of Helwig wines, too.

We were there last Friday for the wine club pasta lunch. If it shows you how long it had been, we had 27 bottles to pickup at Villa, 6 bottles to pickup at Bella and 6 bottles to pickup at Helwig.

I last night we finished off a bottle of Stellina!

Right now I'm drinking Primitivo.

I had two Golden Comets. Both were very friendly but one Quit laying and died of Mareks Cancer. The other is still going strong and lays eggs at 2.5 years old.
Too bad you can't get a flock of Marraduna Basque.....

Cinnamon Queen is a GSL strain; I had five in my flock but had to give away some pullets with six roosters I had to rehome last year. I wish I had kept those gals but they were the newest members of the flock and I just couldn't give up any of my senior hens. Great layers and really sweet hens.

My original eight chickens included a BSL. She was the bossiest of my hens.

My production red is horrible. She beats up on the other hens - nobody can be in ANY nest box when she wants to lay.

Linda - I don't get around to the wineries very often. Up my way, Villa Castellano's wine is excellent. I don't like anything from Mt Vernon winery.
