This is my "mystery chick". I'm thinking Salmon Favorolle, roo. What do you guys think? He got a pretty nasty wound between his shoulder blades at 1 1/2 weeks old, so the purple is from the blue kote. He seems to be feathering really slow, he'll be 4 weeks old on monday.

I want to thank PetRock for sharing her Vent Gleet experience. I have two with it and one is pretty bad.

It was a weird experience treating with a suppository....

. The things we do for our chickens.

Do I really have to do this for 7 days?
I used the generic Monistat 3. I cut each of the 3 suppositories into 3 pieces and fed my hen 1 piece in the morning and 1 piece at night. So it was 9 doses and 4 1/2 days. I also used the cream around her vent. I need to check the rest of my flock tomorrow because I am suspecting that I have a few others with it. I used to give them plain yogurt every morning and never had the problem. I recently switched to giving them fermented feed in the morning and no yogurt. Now I'm having a problem with Vent Gleet. I started back with the yogurt in the morning and fermented feed around midday. I hope that helps take care of the problem!

Edited to add that the hen made what looks like a full recovery except that she hasn't started laying eggs again. She looks and acts normal in every other way and her crop is not squishy. Hopefully she will start laying soon! I am missing her dark brown eggs!

It's a sad night in our chicken yard. Remember my penguin walking blue Langshan chicken Jewel? She's the one in my avatar. I had my DH put her down this evening. She took a turn for the worse this week and spent most of her time hiding from our head chicken and her enforcers. They were jumping on her every time they could and the back of her head had scabs from them pecking out her feathers. They must have known that things were not right with her. She also stopped laying eggs last week and was breathing with her mouth open. I think that she could have had liver problems or major problems with her egg equipment. The problems started within a week or 2 of her starting to lay. She was one of my favorites and it was a hard decision to make but it was for the best for her. RIP Jewel!

It is sad and the ones that go always seem to be our favorites.

I have a Heritage RIR that walks slowly. I decided to treat for Coci using corid and she already seems more active. Even as a chick she closed her eyes way too much. She is a big girl too. The Black Australorp that died of liver problems(verified by Necropsy) was a big girl. She had egg laying issued--soft shell and etc. probably related to the liver problem.

I'm so sorry.

Thank you everyone! I keep telling myself that it is silly to be upset but feelings just happen. She was part of the first group of chicks that I hatched and we chose her to stay in our layer flock with a hatchmate who has crippled feet. I have a soft spot for underdogs and Jewel was that. Plus, I nursed her inside for a couple of weeks hoping that I could make a difference and that makes for a strong bond. My DH thinks that my nursing is the kiss of death but I was able to nurse my OE back to health! I just wish that it had worked for Jewel.

She looks like a production red. Does she lay a lot of large to jumbo brown eggs?

Hmmm, well they have quite a few chickens, so I'm not sure which egg she's laying. We've house-sat a few times for them and they just got 4-5 new chickens that someone they new couldn't keep anymore. The rooster in my avatar is theirs. The new hens include two wyandottes, an easter egger and a couple others. Still learning all about the breeds.

Sorry about losing your girl. I'd be pretty upset and emotional too.
