I currently have 1 Mallard duckling, 5 Pekin ducklings, 1 that may be a runner or maybe Cayuga (as a rookie I'm clueless!), 8 Embden goslings that will arrive April 17th from Metzer's, and some Californian rabbits on the way! We also have several fruit trees, a variety of veggies, and even some aquaponics starting sometime soon. We often have an excess of fruit and produce and though we donate loads, we always have loads more. We would love to build some contacts in the area to give some to or trade for their excess :) .
welcome I am by Placerville... what no chickens? we can change that

Hi I was wondering if there was anyone from the Sacramento / Yuba/ Sutter area? I'm a new home steader in a new area looking to meet people for trading livestock and or goods and possibly friendship. Thanks a lot. :)

Welcome to the thread! I'm in Modesto but always looking to make new chicken friends :)

Love them! They are sooooo cute! I have one hatchery black Australorp who is my head hen. She decided to go broody this week and is a very determined sitter so I going to give her some fertile eggs from the farm.

Good morning everyone!

My first pip is chipping out a hole in the top rather than zipping, that's a new one for me. Just a quick review this morning but there are 10 more in there with pips. So far that's 11 out of the 19 that went into lockdown. MIL will be here at around 4 and I think it's looking good so far.

Adorable little orp chicks! Hard to believe they will grow so big and fluffy.

Crossing my fingers for EO's later this month. I've got some coop re-arranging to do

I really line Australorps! They are very sweet--They are right up there with the Basque hens.
These are my first not Hatchery Australorps and Blue is very rare. If the seventh one hatches, It may be splash. I hope it makes it out.:fl

WOW, They are very Cute. I Swear I want a few of every breed. What is my problem! I currently have more chicks and chicken then anyone should ever have and I'm still looking for different eggs to incubate... I must be out of my mind!

Deb did I get you enough eggs?

I am hoping for a bunch of empordanesa.
On another note I will have white empordanesa eggs I can send next week I am getting about 3 eggs per 2 days from 2 hens. I can throw in some olive egger eggs as well. The Empordanesa eggs have been a fairly good color I got a real dark one this evening

So the eggs I picked up from your DW were all empordanesa & OE? I've been trying to do all my sets on Saturdays to make it easier to track when eggs are due to lockdown/hatch. However, this weekend's set it moving to Sunday for the Turkey Hatch. So I'm holding your eggs to set off with them. I already have 39 turkey eggs saved up. I'm still getting 5 most days, so it will be a LARGE setting of turkeys. If they do well, I hope I can find buyers for poults,

Welcome to the thread, it's a friendly and helpful group around here.

Do chickens pant? Emma one of our almost 3 week old EE babies has been breathing with her beak open sometimes. Is she ok?

Yes, generally when they're hot, since they can't sweat.

Molly, you are certainly in the right company. I have GOT to decide on some breeds to part with, but can find a reason to keep each one. I have nearly thirty pens/coops with a different breed in each.........................and still have more coming. It seriously has got to STOP! I'm going to start giving you all permission to smack me down

I'm just starting with breeding and only planned on breeding Langshans (started with 3 colors focusing mainly on blue & splash but now have all 4 colors), Silver Penciled Plymouth Rocks, and maybe 1 other breed. Now we have an Am Bresse trio, 3 Cream Legbar pullets (need a cockerel for them), a quad of Welsummer chicks (I think 1 cockerel & 3 pullets), and want some kind of Marans for meat & eggs. We plan on rotating the breeding groups and letting them free range when not in the breeding pens. Does that mean I can add even more breeds to the list?!

Thank You!

#7 hatched over night and is in the brooder.

I opened the top of the incubator twice during the hatch. The last one last night was fairly long- took chicks out and tapped the un pipped eggs to see if I could get a chirp out of them. I then turned the pipped egg pip side up and tilted it better. humidity in the hatcher went down to 30% but quickly jumped back up to 70ish. There were no sticky chicks or shrink wrap.

I will candle and check the last 4 in there tonight.
