California - Northern

I will be a new chicken mama this weekend. The finishing touches are happening on the coop and run as I type, and we should be able to pick out our pullets this weekend. We are in Santa Rosa, CA. I love having the great resource....and to have such an active "local" thread!

Hello and
welcome-byc.gif

I love chickens, and I am glad you put up the coop before the chickens. Once chicken math strikes you might be scrambling to make coops just ahead of the chicks coming out of the brooders...

I feel I should warn you - do NOT look up ANY of the breeds being talked about on this thread, do NOT buy an incubator, and do NOT allow ANYBODY to show you chick pictures ... they are very addicting and you might end up with millions of chickens, like the rest of us!

Too late. When I was young I dreamed of having big fluffy ladies.....A Buff Orpington to be exact. I am in my late 30's and I finally said...just do it. LOL I told my hubby 2 weeks ago I was getting chickens, and he jumped on building the coop.I know what breeds I want after researching, and can't wait to fill my coop with them!. Sadly some of the breeds I want are hard to get, and I have to start with pullets. We have 4 cats and a small house which is not conductive to chicks :(

I am so excited....I have waited 25 years for chickens

It is amazing the rare and special breeds people have here.

I bet we could find what you are dreaming of. There are a lot of Auto Sexing breeds around here too.

Me too. I'm looking for gold laced orpingtons and can't seem to find any

why are you looking for ?
I would like some English Orpingtons........but I have to have piullet which can be difficult to find. I figure I will just start with some basic breeds like a Buff Orpington, Silver laced Wyandotte, Welsummer, Barred Rocks. and maybe an EE or Amerecauna. I might try a Cochin if I can find one. I really do like the big fluffy ladies...LOL
