As I peruse my property - all two-thirds of an acre - I revel in the fact I won't have to have anything weed-whacked. Only the Vinca has survived and the blossoms don't last long. There is nothing to mow.

I suspect you don't allow your flock to range freely, right?
;)

My side of the yard is fenced off separately from the rest of the yard. We have 2 shepherd/chocolate lab mixes that would hurt chickens if given the chance. My side has the chickens and my garden (and no grass ;)). The other side has the playground, and dogs- and lots of grass ( and the neighbors with newer houses and tiny backyards).

I have a dark egg candling question....I have 24 very dark Black Copper Marans eggs in my incubator right now. 12 from two different sources. One source is a bit darker then the other but when I went to candle them (day 11), in general, I can see through the "darker" eggs easier then the lighter dark eggs. Why would that be? Just to clarify, these are all very dark Marans eggs, so I'm not talking about #4 eggs.

I'd like to post the question on a Marans thread but don't know which one is a novice friendly one.

I have seen that too! It has to do with the thickness of the shell sometimes more than the color.

I'd hatch all the time if I could sell them!  That's so great :-).  Did you see someone in Stockton/Galt advertising TURKEY eggs...must resist...

I love turkeys. Check to see if you have blackhead in your area before you try and have them with chickens. That is the kicker for keeping them together.

My chickens mow our lawn.
I can't. :(. I'm going to have to find them new homes when they start crowing. Hopefully I have a few more months.... My hubby keeps trying to convince me we need a mini goat, so he doesn't have to mow the lawn. ;)

Yay for 20,000!

So, my new girls are doing well so far. When I open the coop door in the mornings the all run to the food an water like they have not eaten in weeks. Should I be putting food and water in the coop at night? They range in age from 10 to 14 weeks.

Also my little BO was picked on pretty heavily at the farm where I got her from. She is missing a ton of neck and back feathers. There seem to be pin feathers coming back in. Should I up her protein until she is fully feathered? Funny thing.....she is the most skittish of them all. I guess since she was picked on. I brought her home because I was worried no one else would since she looked so bedraggled.

Get geese, great lawn mowers.

Pam, when they are about ten days along, use two bright flashlights, one on the top and one on the bottom. Good eggs will look dark, non-developers will glow.
