Those Turkens/Naked Necks are really cool. They are pretty chill but love to roost and be up high if they can. Day 1 they laid 3 eggs, next day 2 eggs, next day 1 egg and today 2 eggs. They didn't pause at all - I assumed relocation stress would cause them seize up their egg laying desire for a couple weeks. Not at all. One lays a pretty brown color- like barred rock brown egg and the other lays one that is about 2 shades darker- nice rich brown.

I think we are going to pause on chickens for a while. I need to finish hatching the little bantams I have in and then go from there. I did a head count and keepers- we have about 25 of each chicken and duck. We have just over 50 birds. That's quite a few lol. Not as many as a lot of you but that's more than we need for just ourselves with even a few leftover. :D

I've been reading the past few days but haven't felt like I had much to contribute so I've just been lurking. But I'm here! Weather is lovely here in Redding today and I guess for the next few weeks. Whoa mama! 80s even!

Anyone else warming up?
Yes!! My pens are finally drying out and it's supposed to be like 75 here in dunsmuir tomorrow! Will be lovely to be outside

Sold all ten of the baby chicks I hatched tonight. :(. It's kinda sad, but I guess that means I can get more hatching eggs, right?

Well, after all the wind and freezing weather, today turned out gorgeous! Got up into the sixties, even! To celebrate, I gathered up the 3-week old chickies from the brooder and let them in the chicken run for the first time.

They spent about four hours in there running around, flying, eating sand, scratching, etc. I tossed in a small maple tree at we just dug up a week ago, and they had fun nibbling on the roots and small branches.

Then, DD#1 came home after a visit with her grandpa. She brought with her fruit tree trimmings full of blossoms and a bowl full of earthworms she dug up. If it is possible for chickens to be in hog heaven, mine were.

After deciding it was getting a little chilly, and the chickies needed to go back in the brooder, I went outside to gather them up. The run door was wide open with DD#1 inside. Turns out that one of Trisha's Barnevelders girls had "escaped" from the run. Of course, she "escaped" after DD#1 asked me if she could let the chickies out to play in the yard. The Barnevelders are super friendly and don't seem to mind being caught, so DD#1 managed to get her back in the run without much trouble, which is when I arrived on the scene.

I have to say I am really liking the Barnies and EEs. The Marans are the most skittish. They freak out and thrash around when you pick them up. Don't think I'll be keeping any of them once they get old enough to be sexed. The EEs are the friendliest so far. They are the first to come to me when I open up their brooder. My husband calls one of them his "little buddy" because it will jump out and join him when he sits down. The Barnies are just bold and comical. When we put a worm/bug/treat in the brooder, they are the ones who immediately grab it and start the chicken chase. When I was putting them in the pet carrier for the trip back to the garage, the Barnies were the ones that were the easiest to catch, but kept trying to escape from the carrier when I stuffed other birds in. Hmmm, maybe she actually did "escape" from the run. :P

After getting all the birdies back in their brooder, they immediately crashed. They were like a little kid after a birthday party. Could barely keep their eyes open while I was putting their food and water back in the brooder. All in all, good day for them.

The Black Penes are in lockdown. It is very hard to tell what is going on with them but I might hatch some of them. I hope they are a less flighty bunch than the ones from Sand Hill.

I am just around the corner from you. I can't remember what it was you hatched but how did you sell them all? Was that your plan?

:yuckyuck hahahahaha Ali I am gonna have too many chicks!!! They aren't gonna be Real Red stars but some will be red and they should be super good layers...If you want to try a couple out let me know.  I will give them to you for making me laugh.   I am of course counting my chickens before they hatch here and I will post fluffy butt pictures for your perusal at the end of the month.

One thing for sure I am always trying to be funny, never offensive :D. Sometimes I miss my mark though.

Actually the color doesn't matter to me too much. I am just looking for a really nice chicken that lays really well. I feel like I am trying to replace the one I lost, which is impossible, but she laid almost every day of the month nice big eggs and she used to jump up on my shoulder. Sweet girl she was. She wasn't stunning or large or high maintenance. Just reliable and friendly.

Like you I am now starting to get nervous about how many I will have at the end of this hatch....... I have 45 eggs in, and due to various issues I am not expecting more than 50%. Of that 50% I have to find homes for the boys. Soooooo unless I get 75 % males, which apparently is possible, I am gonna have a lot too!

But hey!!! I am always willing to look at more.

It may not be too much of an issue. Lizanne just sold 10 today!
