Looks good How many chicks are going in there? When do you get them ?? Are the going to be in your bedroom?Made my brooder today! Mom got a very large, free cardboard box...but it had no bottom, so we cut it down to size(it's about 1.5 feet tall inside now) and stretched it around a wood pallet. Used the leftover cardboard to line the top of the pallet(to support the weight of the sand that I'm using in the brooder). We doubled up a large, heavy-duty plastic liner and stapled it to the sides(plus put tape all the way along the top edge of the plastic, not only to hold it in place but also to prevent a chicken from somehow getting behind it). Put in the sand...Used 2 pieces of chicken wire from a roll of it that we already had laying around as a top. Though only 1/2 of it is on in this picture...Total cost, not including sand... $4
Sorry, don't mind the bare mattress...sheets are in the washer!

Yep, my bedroom is the only safe place for them. My mom has a cat that is a bloodthirsty beast, and my bedroom has a gate across the doorway to keep the animals out even when the doors are open. This ensures that no chickies will end up as a snack for her devil cat.
Initially, all 16 chicks from my order will be going in there. But most of them will be sold, hopefully within a week or two, and I will end up raising between 6 and 8 in there. I get them between the 28th and the 1st
How fun! what are you getting?
Yeah for the growing chickies!!!Today is Day 7. I just finished candling all 36 of the eggs. Pulled 6 Dorking and 1 Lemon Orp egg (my ONLY LO egg) I did an eggtopsy on one of the Dorkings and on the LO. They never started to develop. The other 5 Dorking eggs have dancing embryos.
That was a cool cool thing to see. There are only 5 other eggs that I saw dancing babies in including the Prairie Rangers from Chooks Chick (that those are developing makes me super
) but I don't want to risk pulling any of the questioables yet. Too many sad stories of giving up too soon.![]()
My husband who is convinced I have gone round the bend will be relieved that there are only 29 left in there. He is supportive....but as he makes plans for the new coop he shakes his head.
