Yeah he's not really nice. He is very very zealous as a mater- the girls aren't fans of him and he attacked my male Pekin and ripped his drake curls clean off his tail. :\ But I still feel bad that his little duck wienie has been exposed to the elements. Possibly picked on by the others (the others don't know what it is so they often grab the goods and tug- not pleasant). So his expiration date is tomorrow. I am not looking forward to the plucking!

Can you skin a duck?

I hope there will be a lot of pictures!

So the croad langashtan that lays a pink/purple egg, I was wondering if I crossed one with an Easter egger that lays a nice blue egg. Would the chick then grow to lay like a lavender egg?

Husband was asking me what I was going to do with all the chicks,
I don't have the numbers most of you do but broody room was full and I have more in the laundry room. I listed them on CL and less than 12 hours later they are all spoken for. Well, I will still have the 4 for my vet and the basque due to hatch next weekend. Guess I need to re-load and up the price.

I'll be curious to hear how this goes. I've read you either have to wax them or singe them to get off the fine hairs (unless it doesn't bother you to eat them). I'm expanding my waterfowl and next year there will definitely be extras. And I do love duck!

OH NO! Sacrilege! I LOVE crispy duck skin!
I am excited to use the reserved duck fat for oven fried taters. I hear duck fat is crazy tasty.

Hatchling possible emergency- the chick that just hatched her tummy area around where the cord was attached is very swollen. Is there something I should be doing for her? I don't see anything bleeding or leaking...just very swollen...

Give it a little spritz of vetricyn and leave her be. It should be fine as long as no one else picks at it.

Spray with vetricyn and set it in a tea cup--the yolk needs to absorb. If there is no leakage the chick should be ok. Leave the chick in the cup in the incubator for up to a day. Give it a drop of baby vitamins without iron too.
