Chicken butt! (because looking at the camera is too mainstream)




I swear these girls got a ton of wing feathers overnight. And I must admit that I think I've already chosen a favorite. My little Blue Andalusian(and her black sister) are the first to run over every time I stick my hand in the brooder! I just love the little Blue, she's so cute.

The paper towels have been out of the brooder for a while now, and the chicks seem to be doing good with just sand. Not eating too much of it, still eating their food. And they have discovered how fun it is to scratch in the sand!

I seem to live on Sally's thread when hatching. Haven't had fluids leaking from pips yet but the way the membrane is on a couple of the saddle eggs it could be possible this time.

I'll be cutting down the cartons by quite a bit to try and have more visable area to watch for pips. The membrane is still wonky in these, while candeling it sloshes around making marking the air cells tough. I figure I'll try to err on the side of caution.

Speaking of shipped eggs.... My boss (the postmaster) and I are trying to work out a way to make it better to ship eggs on our end. Right now hatching eggs are shipped like any "regular" package. Live chicks, roosters, and any other poultry are shipped separately, so they tend to be much more protected during shipping. She took a bunch of pictures of my shipped eggs (I had them shipped to my work), and we were thinking of trying to get USPS to ship hatching eggs like they would ship any other live animal. I told her about how tons of people ship hatching eggs, and more people would by or sell them if the results were better.

That would be great!

Yes, it does not make sense. My Youngest Daughter has a science project this year--protect the egg for an egg drop. They were not allowed to use bubble wrap--it was considered cheating to use it. If used properly it is the best way to protect an egg!

My package from Our Fly Babies had not bubble wrap or even foam nuggets!

How were they packaged?

They will get over the pasty butt quickly now that they are eating the sand.

The amber liquid is rare but happens more often with shipped eggs. The only one to do that this was from the shipment that had three broken eggs and then had 4 that started to leak. Those eggs had a lot of shipping stress.

Cutting down the egg cartons is a good idea!

There were 3 broken eggs in the box when it came. I did not wash the remaining eggs, they dried off really fast and never developed an odor,I was waiting for one though. They rested in the turner for 3 days with really low humidity, about 20°, thought that might help, didn't seem to hurt.

I tried something similiar - I put it in on a very small plate. Only one ate it, the rest just ran through it. I was worried they'd hurt each other when pecking it off their siblings feet. But I found that having them eat off my finger works really well! For the most part, they stay clean(one of them does have yogurt all over her head, though) and almost all of them ate it.
Tomorrow I'll go check out the feed store and see what they have to put in the water! You do Probiotic AND Electrolyte packets, in the same water container?

Yes I use both in the same waterer. I also add a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar. They all seem to thrive off of the extra vitamins and probiotics! I only do this for the chicks for the first couple of weeks. Then they get plain water and acv. If I get a sick chick or chicken, I start the electrolytes and probiotics again.

A family of monkeys tried to kidnap my friends 2 year old son from a beach in Indonesia. The kidnapping was a group effort. The parents and their son were standing near the shore and a group of monkeys started rummaging through the stuff so they ran to shush them away, and a different group ran in, grabbed their son and started dragging him away. Luckily a bunch of other people from the beach came to the rescue and the monkeys let go of the boy and ran off.

My friend's son is now 25 and has a little monkey of his own (human), so the story ends well, but Monkeys will swipe, kids, cats, purses... you name it.

OMG That is INSANE!! That would be the craziest thing to see! I wonder if the monkeys would have made him their King.

A few questions:

1) Is play sand ok to use around chickens? I've read somewhere that sand had to be silica free...bit confused as silica free?

2) Our babes are 5-51/2 weeks old. Two though are a little behind on feathering. Our English Oprington looks like a half plucked baby ostrich as she goes through growth spurts and feathering. Can we still move them all into their coop or maybe only out their in the day until the two catch up?

3) When you move the tweens into their new digs do you keep them locked up in the actual coop for a couple days so they understand that's their new home or can you let them enjoy their run as well?

Hi Nikon - I kept my tweens in their coop for 5 days before letting them roam. After that we had no problem with them putting themselves to bed in the coop at dusk.

my goodness -- it never rains but it pours -- a FIFTH chicklet of mine, the second of the two SPPRs, has apparently gone broody -- sitting on three fake eggs & has plucked her breast feathers out... the world seems to be pushing me toward more and more chicken math!

I am sad now....We really want pictures of new shipping methods like this for the Great egg shipping experiment thread! We are trying to get breeders that ship to join the thread. It looks like I was able to get Our Fly Babies to change the way they ship! Score! One! for Us!

I'm Cherina I am in Lodi. I'm a chicken mom grandma really, very accidental. It started with 4 chicks for my daughters and by the end of a few weeks we has 3 Wyandottes, 2 EE, 4 Cochins, 5 seramas and 6 silkies !!! I really hope w e can do this well I don't know how this happens, CHICKEN MATH IS REAL!!! So we have 2 broaders in a large dog kenel in my daughters room, we have a small coup but need to figure plans for another largers one and a run... Any suggestions about anything! or suggestions for easy plans would be amazing. Here are some of my grand peep babies
