A 5th broody?? Geeze lady! Are you going to put any more eggs under them? Hahaha why am I even asking?!

i know, it's kind of crazy -- but it seems a shame not to let her try to hatch something interesting? i'm waiting to hear back from the woman in Davis I originally got birchen marans eggs from, for my first broody, that my well-meaning neighbor accidentally collected out of the nest while i was out of town -- if she doesn't have any available right now, i'm thinking of asking Deb (hi, Deb) about her marans and perhaps isbars...

how on earth i'll decide which chicks to keep, out of the variety that's (hopefully) hatching, i have no idea!

I use sport's tape (the white stuff), it sticks well but comes off easily without hurting the skin. They sell it at WalMart in the bandage section and it's cheap. Just take a piece about two inches long. Place the chick's foot on the sticky part of the tape near one end and position the toes how you want them. Then fold the tape up to the edge of the foot, right up to the leg. Stick the tape down well around the foot/toes. The tape will stick out much too far. Then take a pair of sharp scissors (I use the little craft scissors from WalMart), carefully trim off the excess tape to make it slightly larger than the foot, rounding the edges. Just be very careful to not cut a toe. Hold the foot up to a light if you're not sure. Sport's tape comes off easily, but will stay on until you want to remove it. (DH was a coach, we have tons of the stuff, that's how I discovered how well it works. It's what I used when I needed to tape the dog's tail). Anyway, I take it off about every other day and reapply if needed.

Good luck.
Thank you thank you thank you!!! Now that I can do. The little cripple bird is doing better it can support itself on one leg when propped and it's curled foot is pliable so I am hopeful for a full recovery. Seriously Deb I almost cried when I read how simple it can be. I will get the tape and do this today!

The rest of my waterfowl shipped today!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah!!!!! I am afraid if we had waterfowl they would just up and go live on the lake.
My Cinco De Mayo Hatch happened way early, for those paying attention to Guinea hen and Turkey hatches. They were supposed to hatch on the First, LOL.

12 Guineas have hatched and both turkeys. There are 4 more pips. Guinea Keats are so cute! Too bad they grow up to look like the Borg.....

Super cute!!! Hey maybe next spring you can hatch some of Renee's eggs for me??? pretty please. I am done other than saving a clutch when a broodie gives up and I'll just get a mini brinsea for that.

I am sad now....We really want pictures of new shipping methods like this for the Great egg shipping experiment thread! We are trying to get breeders that ship to join the thread. It looks like I was able to get Our Fly Babies to change the way they ship! Score! One! for Us!
Think of all the potential baby chicks we have saved!

That is a great thread and it's great that you got them to change their method!

Guess what?
Chicken butt! (because looking at the camera is too mainstream)

I swear these girls got a ton of wing feathers overnight. And I must admit that I think I've already chosen a favorite. My little Blue Andalusian(and her black sister) are the first to run over every time I stick my hand in the brooder! I just love the little Blue, she's so cute.

The paper towels have been out of the brooder for a while now, and the chicks seem to be doing good with just sand. Not eating too much of it, still eating their food. And they have discovered how fun it is to scratch in the sand!
B Collie those are some great shots!

Rehomed 7 of the Privett Chicks yesterday...made enough of a difference that my husband said Wow there are hardly any chicks in here any more which is funny because there were still 20 total

The Privett chicks seem to me so much heartier than MPC chicks I got last year and than my own hatch. Robust brown babies.

My One of my chocolate rocks is Black and I think it's a boy, already has a visible comb, the little brown one has nada.

The Dorking mix is a great little mutt. 4 toes and no crest but a buff polish dorking x, weird

Mixed red chicks are good with the exception of my orthopedic case. That one is also fine except that it can't walk yet but it appears healthy in all other respects. It's going to school with me again today where it will get it's shoe taped on.

Hope you alla re enjoying this weather...it's gorgeous!

Can you say expansion?

Don't forget to give the chick with the bum foot some PolyViSol (no iron) along with taping the foot. I had a little hen who's toes and leg never straightened but she hopped around on a foot and a wing for 2 years!!! She really broke my heart. She looked like hell from having to beat her wings to get anywhere but darn if she didn't come for treats and leave the coop to free range with the others. She really never went very far and towards the end she'd only come out for treats. She lived longer then I had ever believed she would....but now I cull all chicks with leg issues that don't improve right away.

I just had one in this last hatch who's leg went out to the side. She could pull it under her but it kept slipping out. I use vet wrap to make a sling to pull the legs together, this one didn't have curled toes, and I treated with PolyViSol and within 24 hours I had a hard time finding which one had the band on, within another 12 hours it was moving around, walking and stable so I took off the leg brace and continued with a few drops of the PVS. I can't tell who it was now but if it hadn't improved we would have culled. It's a big commitment to raise a handicapped chicken and I just can't do it.

I can't tell you how much I think the PolyViSol plays in their ability to heal. I know it's just vitamins but I've seen immediate improvement on chicks that historically would not improve. Last year I had a chick from a broody that was having trouble standing up, kept falling back on her joints. Since I didn't want to deal with a crippled chicken I culled but I wonder if PolyViSol would have given that chick the umph it needed to stand up.

It is good to hear that they are healthy.

The chicks I have hatched this year have been fairly healthy. There were a couple of with navel hernias but overall much healthier than the ones form McMurray last year. Even the one with the messed up eye is very healthy.

Off to see what Privett has......

Ron - she came from the chicks I got from you. Is she a Marans? She obviously just pugged out so ignore her lumpy chest haha. I was tossing seeds out trying to draw her near. Didn't work hence the zoomed in cruddy pic. Oh and I think they are about 11 weeks old I want to say?
