California - Northern

I was raised in N. ca I thought it was below Fresno. So. California began In Bakersfield it is not that large just wall to wall ppl who have no idea what real country living is like.

they look so snug -- and just have to add, i was enormously impressed with Stacey from Thistledown Farms' packaging of her marans and SFH eggs that i received this week -- apologies for not taking a photograph, but she wrapped each egg in a folded paper towel, snugged them into two half-cartons that were then tapped shut, put those inside a box with lots of bubble wrap bubbles, and then put that box inside ANOTHER, larger box, packed in with newspapers. not a single egg broke.

Putting them into tissue paper and then into egg cartons works ok if shipped by ground locally. If it will take more than two days to get to the destination, the package is transferred to Ariborn Express. That transfer is rougher than straight USPS ground.

I have had very broken eggs packed like that. The Meeks method double boxed has been the best all around method and the very best for Air shipped eggs.

I can't wait to see the chicks from Thistledown Farms!

Maybe that's what it is. I'm not really worried about it - as long as it doesn't affect their quality of life (which I know a few bent feathers won't) then it doesn't matter to me

I was just curious about it.

EDIT:

I have noticed that my other Light Brahma has two toes that are fused together. Is this something that needs to be fixed? Or will she be just fine with her toes like this for the rest of her life?

We got some dark brahma bantams 3 years ago and 1 had fused toes on both feet. Since they were boys they were re-homed so I don't know if it affected him later or not. Would be nice to know though.

I had a Marans chick hatch with webbed toes on both feet. She's about 12 weeks old now and is doing great. I contacted the eBay seller and she never got back to me. I wasn't mad I just wanted her to know what I got and so she was aware because she was the breeder after all

For the short time he was here we called him Ducky, the closest we've come to waterfowl. Not giving up yet but I've got a dove loft and grow out pens to build yet.

It is so beautiful here in the bay area this week! Up to 80 degrees at my house today. I let my girls out and my sweet Silkie was just standing there in the sunlight. It was as if she had never seen the sun before! I had to share. Here's to a beautiful weekend!

Happy Friday!! Cute picture!

Wow!

Did you name her Phyllis Diller?

So very cute!

That's a perfect name!!

Question for those with quail. Could they be housed with doves/pigeons? Thinking about adding quail eggs to our market items but trying not to cover 3 acres with bird buildings.

Here is a picture of my new Crele Penedesenca rooster. I gave him away 2 years ago and when I found myself short a roo I called the woman I gave him to and was soooo happy she still had him. I asked her if I could buy him back and she said I could have him. Poor guy had to spend 2 months in quarantine in a 10 X 10 dog run, but now has a pasture to romp in . His new lady friends are quit enamored by him.

Here is a picture of a Cream Legbar rooster and an Olive Egger (Cream Legbar X Crele Pene). As you can see Cream Legbars, Crele Penedesencas and OE (crele pen X Cream legbar) rooster look very similar except for the leg color.

I have a 5 week old Marans chick who has two toes fused together. I thought about separating them and looked up several posts on how to do it. But he showed his sex early and since he is slated for the dinner table, I am just letting it be. It doesn't seem to be causing him any problems so far. Your chick's toes look like they would be easier to separate than my chicks if you decide to do it. Just do a search on BYC for fused toes.
