"Cold won't be an issue for you at all as long as they are dry and out of direct wind. Heat will be your biggest problem (I grew up in San Jose and know it can get HOT in Gilroy). Place your coop under the shade of a tree if you can. On really hot days, wet down the ground. It really cools the chickens off if they can lie in the shade on damp earth. Welcome aboard!" [/quote]h Thank you all for your help. I have no AC as we have huge shade and fruit trees on most of our lot. Right now the coop is sitting on decomposed tamped granite against the house under a cherry and apple canopy. In the winter I imagine I might drape a tarp or move the coop right to the back door for a bit more shelter. This coop has two nest boxes and two 24" long perches with a take out tray underneath in that little area with the window. I was worried that there wasn't a door at the top of the ramp and every book I read at the library and what I've seen here, had a door. Glad to hear that they may be fine!

We cut the grass in the field yesterday because it was above my kneesand found two baskets of eggs. I wondered why production had dropped. LOL Here is the last bunch before it was chopped.

Here are a few pictures of chickens after apparently laying their eggs in the chamomile. Sneaky girls.

Wait until one goes broody in the weeds....Any time I see production drop I start searching for hidden nests....Some hens are very crafty.....

I was afraid we were going to weed wack a hen on a clutch so we searched each section before cutting. I was shocked by the piles of eggs we found. I figured some were being laid in the weeds, but I did not realize we were loosing so many.
