California - Northern

I was expecting yellow chicks but not neon yellow, and when they zip, they mean it. 2 out, 1 zipping and 3 more pipped. Go babies go!

Oregon being one of the rougher states on shipped eggs doesn't surprise me. A couple of these eggs reminded me of snowglobes with the air bubbles drifting around inside.

I am a little worried about that incubator, though. The temp adjuster is right on top where the kids can reach it. Only one thermometer of unknown accuracy. Eek! The incubator I used for my hatch is in use until next weekend. I think I might do a swap as soon as I can. It is a Hovabator that has the controls on the inside, under the lid.

Just something I picked up from a lady at 4h who has been helping classrooms hatch for over 20 year...the said to tape a cup over that dial to cover it and put it out the way of inquiring little fingers.  I hope you have a great hatch!

Thanks! That is an excellent idea!

If the eggs are under a broody she has instincts on her side.  They are so close to hatching you won't see much if you candle.  They will be mostly dark with an air cell.  Anything that glows isn't going to hatch since there was no development, they really do "glow" compared to an egg in the late stages of development.  Hens hatch eggs that have been rained on, rolled around in the dirt, pooped on by other girls adding their eggs, at this stage of the game all we can do is watch and cheer them on IMO.  Others will chime in who have much more experience with hatching, I'm waiting for my 4th batch to hatch.  Broodies are the best!

Thank you! I'm holding out hope for them then! I did candle a few of them. They were very dark inside. One wasn't, but its the one from my girl that my roo doesn't go with. I appreciate the info!

Eek...I just need to know if they NEED to be separated. Because if they don't, then I'd prefer to just leave them how they are.
No you don't need to be separated. You can clip it if you want and put corn starch on right away but I didn't when I had a baby born with it. She's 12 weeks old and thriving.

Thanks! That is an excellent idea!
Are they up to figuring out %? If so try weighing the eggs, because lgs are a bit erratic, and figuring out what the humidity should be for the next 2 days ( maybe weigh m,w,f?) in groups? will get you a better hatch rate. Mario wanted you to figure out the outgasses mass vrs humidity vrs something else last night, and turn it into equations. I TOLD you he is a mean person!

Before I set the last eggs in the Genesis with the digital readout, I took the heating unit off to clean under it. I noticed that the heater wire was bent down at the end, just before it exits out to the top and least to the connector. The wires were touching, so I separated them. That incubator was never very close to the set temperature. It never has been, so I had been using it as for hatching.

It was at 100.5 when I got home last night, so I spent the evening and this morning getting it back to the correct temperature. The incubator is now at 99.6 and the thermostat is set at 100.4. To get to 99.3 before I had to set the thermostat to 101.8 or so!

Weird but I am very happy now. The temperature is very stable too.
