California - Northern

Hate to say it but as soon as you can tell the better if you're not planning on eating them. My husband just says "ok mark the boys for the long walk"

but it's better then later on.
Yeah, I would love to move them out right now...... what exactly does he do on that long walk? lol

I tried calling that Sacramento Processing company just to see what their rates are and no one answered the phone.....*sigh*

I would even give them to a farmer or someone that is "used" to growing them out for food. Anyone local-ish wanna process my birds?

Or finish growing them out for food?

we live in a little valley and there's a family of foxes way way up the hill and he gives them to them. We have a great livestock guardian dog so we don't worry about the predatory animals. It's sad but I feel a lot better they go to the mama fox :)

I looked it up, and someone said it's $2.75 a bird.

Well that might be great if they answered their phone.....:) Where did you look that up? I keep trying to google processing chickens, etc. and nothing really comes up.

Edited: Yay! They finally answered the phone. They have a minimum order of $50 = 18 birds ($2.75 per bird lilke you said Lizanne), or they can do less obviously for the same $50. They can process birds up to 10 lbs. and you do need an appointment but they could get me in tomorrow if I wanted. So they aren't that far out in terms of an "appointment". He said 18 birds would take about 2 hours.

That is good because I was reading up on how to process, and it is a little beyond me I think. I am sure after watching it in person "PetRock"

, I might be able to get the hang of it, but I tend to be a hands on learner.

I've helped, but I haven't done the whole processing thing. I've done everything except the killing part. It's not super hard. Maybe some of us could get together and have a rooster processing party. I have 2 for sure (maybe more) that are going to need to be done. I figure that if you have to give them away, they are most likely going to meet the same end. If you keep them, at least they are going to be your dinner -- not someone else's.

Some pics from a week-ish ago of the flock.

Cuckoo (SLW left), Sprinkles (out of focus OE rooster), Ellie (middle, Partridge Ameraucana)

Drunken dust bathing session!

Our Ameracuana Roo (who is even prettier now. We got him from Chickee)

I totally just sat down to pee and it shook the whole toilet! lmbo! Next time I'll just hold it and see to the animals first. I have never ever ever in my life been on a toilet that moved. Like ever. That was the weirdest thing ever.

Oh my gosh! Laughed so hard the hubs had to lean over and read what was so funny!

I was putting the chickens to bed when it hit, but didn't even notice it somehow, but my mom who lives only 7 miles away from us said the furniture was shaking in downtown Grass Valley!

Hi all I am new and in the Sacramento area, nice to meet you all. Anyone have suggestions on how to get rid of a roo. I picked up what were supposed to be 6 pullets nine weeks ago, but my barred rock flexed HIS vocal cords this morning and I can't have roos. Looking to give him away to a nice home. My buff orpington is also showing signs of being a roo but (it) hasn't crowed yet so I will hang on to it until it does. I have posted the barred rock on craigslist, any other suggestions
