It can take effect immediately. Usually they say 3 weeks but I got an OE chick 10 weeks after I had OE roo stew this year so it can be longer for super sperm

Go get a plastic plumbing piece from osh or lows. It is thick enough to work better then a toilet tube. There is a led flashlight that is 400 lunes on amazon for less then 10 bucks. Just pop the plumbing piece on and you can see everything if you keep the batteries up.
I just use my hand. What does the tube do?
Bumblefoot is a staph infection caused by a puncture, like a sliver that gets infected. It is not transmitted to others in the flock. Here is a great video on how to do it. http://www.bucknrunranch.com/blog/2011/10/21/bumblefoot-surgery-warning-very-graphic-pics-andIt -description/
The Staff that causes bumblefoot is in the environment, so they do not pass it on, but others can get it if they break the skin on their feet. If one gets it then others are more likely to get it. If the staphylococcus can be killed where they walk they will not get it. I was wondering if oxine could kill it in the dirt.
I just finally got some oxine and read it kills staph. I wonder why they don't use it on people?
I keep forgetting that not everyone has a candler like mine. I can see into olive eggs with mine. You could keep them in for a couple of days, but if they start leaking a bunch they will stick to the turner and can really make the incubator stink.
Oh no they're gone lol. I don't want them to explode or ruin any other eggs in my hatch. It just puzzled me because they weren't wet. The spots were clear and hard like sap
I think the myth of the exploding egg is way over done. It can happen (and would be truly disgusting if it did happen), but doesn't really happen as frequently as you'd be led to believe with some of the exploding egg stories. I've found three weeping eggs in my incubator and nothing exploded. With a cabinet, they can hide in the back since you aren't always staring at them through the window, LOL This didn't explode........... Of course, after I found it (noticed a slight smell coming from the vents), I did this with it, LOL
When the explode it sounds like a firecracker! Last summer I picked up three broody eggs to bring in the house and eggtopsy. Thankfully I had put them in a plastic bag because half way back to the house one of them exploded! Scared me to death, it was so loud! Poor broody had two exploded under her! I zipped the Baggie up and threw them all away!
he looks very sweet! i'm feeling bad for poor Max Jr, his mama keeps trying to ditch him (he's 5 weeks today), and he wanders around cheeping forlornly while looking for her...
He is a sweet little guy and spunky! Sorry for little Max Jr. When we used to separate the lambs from the mamas it was heartbreaking
I think it's cute your rooster has a personal ad! :)
Do you think I should go ahead and put it on CL for him ;) Any suggestions of sweet docile don't care if they are confined kind of girls? I mean they would have the run and the coop which totals about 110 square feet but I need girls that won't be sad if they can't range in case Curly can't hack it. Also thinking smaller LF because I am pretty sure he isn't going to get very big.
I would try to find another handicapped chicken for him. Leg issues or cross beak, another chicken who needs less competition from the others for food and water.
Took advantage of the beautiful weather this weekend to finish covering the run. All that's left is doors and one corner! The green coop roof is growing in GREAT! Hope everyone had a great weekend!
Just beautiful! You did an amazing job!!!!

These pics are a little better. I have one more penedesenca running around the incubator, and one pipped.

cool 2 emps . 2 olive eggers and 2 crele there. 1 girl for sure. other may be a boy with the light wings but looks dark so watch it. you will know real soon

great coop and love the door sign

I do have a sweet 16 week (we think) hatchery BO. She has been picked on by my other birds, and for her sake we are trying to find her a more gentle flock/companions. She is kind of fearful of other birds because she has been chased.....I think if she can be shown some love by other chickens she will make a really great bird.

We bring her in the house at night she gets extra treats and will jump in our laps for pets....and just sit there forever.

hmmmm...our little are just 3 and 4 weeks old. Our bigs just over a year. What would I need to do to integrated her with the young ones? Or would it be best to put her with the big ones after her quarentine? Anyone? I would like to help out here if I can it would be a mutually good thing.

My big girls all get a long really well so well that I have trouble figuring out who is at the top. Sometimes I think it's the Australorps other I think the Red Stars.

This could work out really well.

good idea. I think I will put my little dorking x polish with him too if she is a little girl. She is docile and they hang together quite a bit. In the yogurt and hard boiled egg feeding frenzies she and Curly and the little OE avoid the fray.

Since DH isn't re-acting to this little one, she is staying. He claims to have allergies, if he sees a cat, his eyes will start itching. Rose just loves to sleep in his lap. Was a nightmare introducing her to 3 dogs that have never lived with a cat before, let alone a 7 week old spitfire. We lost our last cat 8 years ago.
Adorable kitty.

Had to share some broody pics. "
"Time for a nap kids, follow me" , clucks the hen.

Now the tricky part...trying to get all 20+ chicks under one hen, LOL.

Trisha
That is pretty funny! She's doing a great job though.

My Barnie pullet (black from a blue mating) is getting awfully protective of the nest when laying. She screamed at me yesterday and she's plucking her belly. Please, let her wait until the other 3 broodies are done!

It's looking great!
What is the usual temperament of the Barnvelders? My 4 week old roo is a jerk. I am surprised to see it so early. On the other hand I have some of the others in there from the same stock that are not that way at all, he is just really big. He looks like he is a week older than all the other birds that hatched same weekend.
I've had barnevelders for 2 years now. They are the most mellow birds I have ever had. My roosters have had great temperaments and the hens are very friendly. I have yet to have a mean one.
