California - Northern

With the heat being so nasty up in the foothills this early my English Orpinton and brahma and a couple others have been panting on and off. How hot are they when they pant.. like heat stroke hot? I've been watering down the course sand in the run trying to keep they cool, but I'm not home most of the day so I worry about them while I'm at work. Should I invest in a mister? Elecrolytes in their water?
Yes, you should get a mister. I have two that hook up to a garden hose and a timer. They are set to turn on at two and run for 3 hours. If they are still hot when I get home, then I run it longer.

Give them electrolytes a couple times a week during the heat.

Ron can I just eyeball em or do I need to look under all their wings? They look fully feathered.
If they look fully feathered they will be fine.

They might act scared of the dark though. It is funny to see them piling on top of each other....

Is that directly from kings? Delivered????
Or am I living a fantasy?
I could store a pallet...
The price is if you bulk buy--He bought a bunch of 50# bags. I will be able to share with him but he wants to make sure they can keep getting the King feed. I hope so--it is a great price!

He made a deal with the store in Davis. I don't remember how much he had to buy but it was not as much as Modesto Mills makes you get.

I wish I could talk him into getting the Starter\grower.....I really need to move all those chicks off somewhere....

On fermented feed:

I lazily ferment feed. Ie I'll do it then forget. At first no one was that excited about it then they started to prefer it. Its too messy for the silkies.

I put it out in the morning and the big girls and weaned chicks love it. The grow outs could care less. I sometimes feed it to the chicks but you have to be careful if its under lights/ heat. The quail prefer it and like to flick it around and eat if off the aquarium walls when they are younglings. The older ones prefer dry. But the older quail don't like treats either...

You know..... how long does Chicken Feed last? I could probably buy 3-4 bags and it would still be okay for a few months right? Or is that not right?

We should all go in on a big batch of it and meet in the middle to take some home. Woodland isn't that far from me

Maybe we should do a meet up at kings feed and get a few pallets and everyone drive home with a full car after the picnic!

We have driven by there a few times. ...
