Aww... poor kitten! She's lucky to be here today!

ETA: Yes, the fur does look like it was pulled out. There were bits of skin at the base. I've trapped a lot of raccoons but never really paid much attention to how the fur was striped. It could be from a raccoon tail.

So does the white stripe down a skunk only have white? Or is it two toned like that? Maybe the tail hair like you said?
Basque is a boy,  girls are usually darker and the comb is a giveaway.   Thanks for confirming.

The Orp is not an orp,  its an OE (my guess). If that is from my eggs it is from the OE 2 project (DLBB X OE  (True Americana X Marans))  Looks like a roo, but you may be a girl.  Jury is still out on that one.

The Polish is a girl.

I love the Polish. Is she stays a girl I am so happy. I have two others that hatched. The black one in the other pics and an orange one. The black and orange one are both quite a bit smaller than the real purty one! She is pretty nice too so far!

Not that I can compare to Deb, but I'm making homemade sourdough bread tonight.  YUM!

Yummy! This thread has turned to food lately and they all sound so good. Now i can't stop thinking about Blackberry pie!

That last picture says it all.. EWWWWWWWWW
My advise?

Leave the eggs in until day 24 under the broody, if you can. If she won't stay on the nest any more because of the babies - you may have to take them in and check them and put them under a lightbulb in a box to see if you can hand hatch the remainders (if they are good).

I have used a big dog crate for the first week for momma and babies. Leave them in there - they don't need to free range just yet. Just so long as the babies can't get out through the bars. Put the food/water etc in there. Once they are over a week old hopefully they can get away from mean hen - and momma might go after meanie at that point.

You could stick meanie in the broody pen - but be prepared to ignore her complaints.. because that's what she will do - complain and complain and complain...
Thanks. I put meanie in the broody pen. Not too many complaints, but I'm sure she will be squawking come morning. I'll evaluate the eggs tomorrow and decide whether the leave them under the broody.

I haven't posted much lately as it's been so hard to keep up. Anyway, I would like to share with you all in my excitement. My first broody (Zsa Zsa-my bantam polish fizzle) is on day seven and I just got finished with the first candeling. I placed 5 under her and three are growing nicely! One of the eggs (a showgirl) i did a botched job of trying to repair a crack with wax, apparently she was not having it; i found it's empty shell today outside of the nest box. The other showgirl egg is showing no growth so far. Zsa seems dedicated, she is now pecking at us when we try to check on her.

Anyway, thanks again, Chiqita, for the eggs. The kids and I are enjoying this tremendously!
Omg, i have edited this post a hundred times, i swear my phone has a mind of it's own!

Well if you do and it crows it must be a rooster
maybe

Lolol. Whew! Someone got it! I didn't want to get too obvious. It was hard to resist. :D
Time...................we didn't warn you about BluKote?  LOL

Literally, it needs to wear off.

Spray your whole hand to the wrist and start a fad.  Do both hands and say you're wearing gloves...................;)

:lol::lol:

Ewww, ewww, ewww, that was NOT a new egg.  They don't go bad that fast.

That's just not right. Bleck!

I'd say both of the Polish are pullets.  Boys have spiky hair dos at this age,  girls have a nice round bonnet.  I would expect orange saddle feathers to start emerging from the black one at this age if it is a boy, and I don't see any in this photo.  To check:  spread the feathers on the back just above the tail and if you do not see thin shinny gold feathers growing it.... its a girl.

The Crele laced (coming down the ramp)  is also a girl.  The lacing will get really nice by the time she is 5-6 months old so hang in there. The Crele Laced birds start out look Mille Fleurish and the lacing gets nicer as they grow.

Well I think she is already lovely. And to answer a question in an earlier post. All my birds are from you except the Ameraucanas.

Lol, i give up half the time on posting over it. So frustrating!

So here's a question: What's this from?? It's a tuft of fur I found in my garden. Could this be bobcat fur?
I know it's not fox, & there are no dogs this color in the area...

looks like coyote tail fur. could be wrong but generally black like that and has the under coat color like a dog.

I had one running between the chicken yards last night. big healthy one. probably feeds on local kitties.
