California - Northern

Good morning chicken people. Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of visiting Star Rose Ranch and meeting Kim! Kim's place is wonderful and she was generous with her time and totally gracious. I felt like I could talk chickens all day but we had other places to be. It was a lovely day I took my 84 year old mom along for the ride and she made the mistake of asking me all kinds of questions about chickens.

Ron then I was in your neighborhood dropping off two PRs and an SS

I haven't driven along 16 in years and man was it a beautiful day to do it. Stopped and walked around at one of the picnic grounds of Cache Creek. It was a Great day!

I decided to name the new Del Cockerel Ozzie, the new Del Pullet is then of course Harriet and I don't know yet what to call the little Dorking girl but a lot of my new girls are as yet unnamed so...it will come.

I feel so happy that after months of acquisition, hatching, brooding selling and giving away, everyone who still lives out back is who I want to be there and for the moment they are enough. The next thing I am looking forward to is the whole broody experience

Are Polish known for going broody?

Ali I can make red sex links for you now if you want eggs. But I hope your hopeful girls don't turn into boys. Maybe your boys will turn into girls..It happens in some fish species

My human chicks are all home now too. DS had a good time in Puerto Rico. Time to start coaching DD's re how to get a job. Deb, can I send over to you to learn to bake??
Kim's place is great!

I am happy you were able to get those chicks. I will be hatching more SG Dorkings soon. Did you see my Cockerels? I need to get over there to see them soon.

I've been ready along trying to keep up with all the happenings, some days I couldn't even get them all read, let alone reply.
So glad the heat has broken for the time being. I lost 2 hens, 1 was a special needs bird, her pen mate, another special needs bird, is enjoying the extra space for now. When the temps drop this winter I'll have to get her some company. I can only imagine how hard it would be to loose a turkey.

All the coop construction looks great! We are getting ready to start a couple of grow-out tractors.

The basque chicks that were thought to be 5 girls, 2 boys, I'm withholding judgement on them. Looks like 4 boys to me, but they are the first I've seen. My broody pair are doing a great job with their's in the coop. I've got a leg issue with Lucky, need to get a picture later. The baby bantams are growing like weeds.

Great job and fantastic results for all hard, HOT work for the fair Deb! Keeping the "Old Lady" arts going is a labor of love.

Off now to work on record books and to track down a bantam for a new 4-H member. Tonight is sewing, my quiet time for the hour drive to get there.

Thanks for the info Ron - I'll look at it this afternoon when I have time. The starter was from a friend and I've added to it several times before using it. I did not let it rise enough, but I was hungry and I started it late. So it was a little flat. It also stuck to the parchment paper, so I won't use that again. Next time I'll just grease a baking sheet or use my stone.
If the starter does not have enough oomph you can add a tsp of yeast to the sponge after it proofs over night.

Also, there is fed starter and not fed starter. Try taking the starter out of the fridge, pouring out a cup and adding a cup of water, a cup of flour, a tablespoon of potato flour and a teaspoon of vinegar. Let the starter get bubbly--a couple of hours and then start the sponge.

Sourdough starter is amazing! It can be frozen for years and it can be dried too.

Can anyone here help her out?? Saw this on FB Northern CA Poultry People page this am.

"Hi, I'm a 4h member from Lake County and I'll be attending my last fair this summer in September. Unfortunately, my precious show chicken was stolen away in the night by a predator and I am show bird-less. I was wondering if by chance there is anyone willing to sell a fair quality bird to a last year 4h member? All chicken breeds accepted!"

Pat, that doesn't look like pig hair to me. My pigs' hair is not as dense, is very wirey and would not pull out in a tuft like that.

Barbara, so good to meet you! You are too young to have an 84 year old mother and a teenage son! I hope you enjoy your new babies. Their hatch date was 3/31/13.

Ron, I actually have the next batch of eggs ready. I just need to get to town. When were you sick? I hope you are feeling better!

Deb, congrats on the wins!

Hi Kim,

I have a new bag of the Starter\grower for the Boys at your place but it is in my car. If you come to town tomorrow or later, I will have it by the front door.

I was sick Monday, better Tuesday and felt bad again yesterday. I had something like this years ago and I hate It! I want to just get over stuff, not feel bad then good then bad.....I feel much better today and hope to not feel worse tomorrow.

No, polish are classified as non-setters, but I have had a couple go broody over the years. Good thing, they are fairly easy to break. I have a quasi broody crele laced right now so I need to put her in the broody breaking cage for the night. That should do it.

Oh good, they are almost out. I'll come by tomorrow.

You need to stay in bed and let all those girls take care of you for a change! You can't get well unless you rest long enough.

I always use parchment underneath bread baked on a sheet. With French bread and sourdough bread, I like to give the paper a spray of Pam and then sprinkle a little cornmeal. It gives the bottom crust a nice crunchy texture.
