Good morning chicken people! How is everyone holding up? We are house sitting for out flock friends this weekend. They're chickens seem to be doing better in the heat than ours. Then again, ours are still little and have never had to endure it before. They got a little bantam roo and hen after the Fonz died. He's so cute! I'll have to take pics of him, no idea what breed.

I must admit, I had WAY to much fun in the coloring contest coloring my Tudy pic.... lol you'd think my whole life revolved around chickens now!

DE needs to stay dry to work so it will not do anything inside the bird. If it dries out and can stop the larvae, then it may lower the flies.

Sprinkle DE in with the litter. DE is high in calcium so too much in the feed can be bad for them.

Note: it has to Food grade DE.

I have the food grade DE.... so should I just sprinkle it in the sun in their open pen/run & around? Around the quail pens too??

Look what I found walking along the Jack Tone on ramp in Ripon this morning! Silly chicken have no idea how she got there....luckily she squatted so I could save her from being hit on the freeway!

DE works in Dry places so put it any where that it is dry and there is manure.

On the roosts in the coop and in the nest box is good too--it kills mites and lice when the crawl in the DE Powder.

As long as they dont stink or get a hairline crack I tend not too. well sometimes but mostly do to the darker eggs I have they are tough to candle anyways. Maybe I will try tonight but I have to take the top off the r-com to open it which will let all the heat out. Of course if its 80-83 in the house it may not mater much lol
I'll bet your R-com is like the Octagon 20 and the heat and humidity recover quickly, so opening it shouldn't be a problem. Not only that, it has been proven that a cool down daily actually helps give you a better hatch

She must have annoyed a higher ranking hen who told her to go cross the road...

Actually, that's nifty, Liz. Until Kevin the Free Peacock joined my flock, I have been envious of folks who find dumped or stray poultry wandering around. Now I can join that club myself. :D

Three of the many broodies in my flock have been brooding on nests of eggs on the floor of the coop, in corners or under an old step that goes nowhere. This morning, one of my broody blue Orps was clucking around in that "I am a new mother" way, so I went closer to see her chick.

It's a Cayuga duckling! Guess the broody duck laid an egg or two in test spots and Sister 1 swiped an egg. This is the first time this has happened in my dock. (Broody duck is still guarding her nest; she took over a spot underneath a round kitty litter box lid knocked off the bottom section some time ago.)

I wonder if she came out of a big truck hauling chickens somewhere? Her beak isn't clipped though.
