California - Northern

great hiking areas out there.
That range just east of where you are at has some great spots. Sugarloaf area is a great place to hang out and holds the most inland area of the Redwoods I believe
Hey Jason, how are your Silver Ameraucana eggs coming along?

good. out of the 3 that lived from the last hatch it looks like I have a trio.
2 have a salmon ,brown chest coming in and one is blacker

I have not opened the r-com to candle the eggs in there honestly but they are due to hatch Friday.
The R-Com has not moved from between 99.5 and 99.4 with 45% humidity sometimes 46% for a second .
I threw a few crele eggs in at the same time.

I will be offering up all the roosters that hatch. If I get 3 more hens I will be happy with 5 for my project and will sell the rest as pairs with the roosters

I was going to say the same thing! I have candled at 3 days and was sad because they were not developing. I almost slapped myself and of course they were doing much better at 7 days....

Ugh.  I hate this heat, but at least I don't have to work today.  Those postal trucks get super hot, like driving around in an aluminum can, inside it is usually 10-20 degrees hotter than outside.  They mount a little fan to the dashboard, and think that's good enough.  I have to work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and then I'm off the rest of next week.  I had 4 of my 24 shipped eggs hatch Yesterday.  Most didn't even develop.  I think they had to have been pretty old.  From the picture of the eggs in her listing I figured out they are the same eggs she sent me - a week later.  The poor chicks are a hot mess.  They have super sticky egg goo all over them.  I had to give one a full bath last night, because it's whole body was covered and it couldn't move, even one of it's eyes was stuck shut.  It's doing a little better now, but one of it's wings is stuck to it's body, so I'm going to have to try again later.

If those are from one of the buy it now or auction threads report it to the moderator. If they are chronically sending late and old eggs they will. Stop them from posting, but they have to have the reports.

As long as they dont stink or get a hairline crack I tend not too. well sometimes but mostly do to the darker eggs I have they are tough to candle anyways. Maybe I will try tonight but I have to take the top off the r-com to open it which will let all the heat out. Of course if its 80-83 in the house it may not mater much lol

First morning without our little cockerel crowing to begin the day. He wasn't loud but we miss his song

. I woke up about 4 am. By 5 I gave up sleeping more and threw open windows and started the whole house fan. The coolness energized me. I greeted our 3 pullets, causing them to bail out of the coop in anticipation of treats. Fun to wake them up. Got to the farmer's market about 7 am, a bit ahead of some stalls but plenty to pick from. I got a small watermelon to give the girls - my first time freezing anything for them. I sectioned it and froze 5 small hunks with the rind on. Do they eat the rind? (This melon had very thin rind). Have one more run out to do, then hope to hunker down until a family BBQ later this afternoon. My nephew and his new bride are flying in today and the BBQ is a meet and greet, thankfully a small gathering so we can eat indoors. Feel sorry for my brother-in-law pressed into service at the grill, but someone has to do it

. Wishing everyone a good day.

Hello NorCal friends!!! How has everybody dealing with this heat?! UUGGHH I spent most of the day spritzing the chickens & quail with water yesterday. They loved it!

QUESTION: I know flies are inevitable when dealing with the lifestyle we do--cuz it's stinky :) lol... anyway! I was wondering how everybody keeps the flies down????
Do you use a spray? What kind?
Do you use straw for the coop/run floor or something else?

I know most of you have had/have this issue on a regular basis so please tell me!!! I have chickens and quail in the yard & between all of them, there are flies everywhere. I have tried sticky tape, nasty stinky fly traps- bags & containers. They work, but they don't deter.
I'm about to flip out on some flies & I can't kill them all!!

We use fly paper form resteraunt dept, traps and black soldiers flies. We put scarps and quail poop in the bsf bin and feed them to the chickens. They have not liked the weather as much this year so we are getting led. Last year mario was getting 2-4 cups of larvae a day. The girls run to the bsf bin whenever he goes outside just in case.
