Beautiful story! That place is breathtaking!

My 4 sticky new chicks. The poor one in back has a mohawk going on. They seem to be doing well, though. The one in the very front, and the one in the very back are OE's, and the two in the middle are BCM/Dorking crosses.

Sticky should fall off when it dries. Make sure the vent is open though.

I'm sorry you had to rehome him.. I wish you ended up with all pullets

Have a wonderful day!

Not to worry. When I look out at my 3 girls, they get along so well I can't complain. And they have more elbow room! But had they all turned out to be pullets, no way would I give them up. The 3 girls are perfect for us.

Heading out now to family BBQ to do. I recall you had a grad celebration during our last hot spell. I got up so early I am sleepy now. Hopefully I don't nod off and get razzed by my siblings!

Keep cool.

ACU weather says this is a great day for outdoor exercise. They are on crack.

And Stupid.
yeah run from the car to the house or run from the store to the car

I have to go get my exercise right now and I am dreading it.
First morning without our little cockerel crowing to begin the day. He wasn't loud but we miss his song

. I woke up about 4 am. By 5 I gave up sleeping more and threw open windows and started the whole house fan. The coolness energized me. I greeted our 3 pullets, causing them to bail out of the coop in anticipation of treats. Fun to wake them up. Got to the farmer's market about 7 am, a bit ahead of some stalls but plenty to pick from. I got a small watermelon to give the girls - my first time freezing anything for them. I sectioned it and froze 5 small hunks with the rind on. Do they eat the rind? (This melon had very thin rind). Have one more run out to do, then hope to hunker down until a family BBQ later this afternoon. My nephew and his new bride are flying in today and the BBQ is a meet and greet, thankfully a small gathering so we can eat indoors. Feel sorry for my brother-in-law pressed into service at the grill, but someone has to do it

. Wishing everyone a good day.
I rehomed 7 so far and now the next 5 are getting more difficult because they aren't so aggressive as the others, and they are going to be so pretty. I have been procrastinating and that makes it worse. NOW I am going to wait until the major heat passes. I don't want to go out and catch 5 of them....

Hello NorCal friends!!! How has everybody dealing with this heat?! UUGGHH I spent most of the day spritzing the chickens & quail with water yesterday. They loved it!

QUESTION: I know flies are inevitable when dealing with the lifestyle we do--cuz it's stinky :) lol... anyway! I was wondering how everybody keeps the flies down????
Do you use a spray? What kind?
Do you use straw for the coop/run floor or something else?

I know most of you have had/have this issue on a regular basis so please tell me!!! I have chickens and quail in the yard & between all of them, there are flies everywhere. I have tried sticky tape, nasty stinky fly traps- bags & containers. They work, but they don't deter.
I'm about to flip out on some flies & I can't kill them all!!

Tell me :)

Okay this probably isn't an accurate test yet, but I am using sand this time and the flies are less. BUT it is a new coop and run. I scoop up the poop every other day max. Or rather sift the poop. I will know more when the coop is a little more "seasoned".

Be careful with the DE though. They say to wear gloves and try not to inhale it or get it in your eyes. I got it on my skin before and it really does dry out your skin something awful.

Flies are the bane of my existence. I never got these ordered this year, but I have done this in the past and they do work.

Wow those are kind of gross, but could be a good fix.

DE needs to stay dry to work so it will not do anything inside the bird. If it dries out and can stop the larvae, then it may lower the flies.

Sprinkle DE in with the litter. DE is high in calcium so too much in the feed can be bad for them.

Note: it has to Food grade DE.
I had DE in my old coop and didn't notice a huge difference. I would sprinkle it over the areas where they seemed to be the most and I did put it in all the corners of the coop. Never had a problem with mites or anything. Could have just been luck.

There are a whole bunch of people that take this stuff internally. They MIX it in water and drink it. They say it is good for internal parasites.......

..... I am not gonna try it any time soon. Or EVER.
Look what I found walking along the Jack Tone on ramp in Ripon this morning! Silly chicken have no idea how she got there....luckily she squatted so I could save her from being hit on the freeway!
Way to go! Chicken savers UNITE!

The Blue and Black Australorps are 12 weeks old.

Man they are ready for the table already. I want one.

it was actually an odd childhood, in that all our friends back in the suburbs (i grew up in palo alto) went to camp, which was somewhat similar to what we were doing (actually far less "roughing it," i suspect), but it was only for a couple of weeks, and they all learned the same songs and games that we didn't know -- and they spent the rest of their summers swimming at the nearby pool and going to AYSO soccer practice, none of which we had any experience of -- so we felt like perpetual outsiders in a way.

but i greatly appreciate it now -- especially having spent whole summers with complete freedom yet nothing programed, we HAD to rely on our own creativity and imaginations to keep ourselves busy & entertained. lots of reading books, going on hikes, fishing, playing in the willows, etc.

in case anyone is interested, some of my parents' photos (scanned by me) are posted on-line here (in the pictures where there are two little girls, i am the smaller one -- and there's a photo with lots of snow in the background, and me holding a lump of snow -- that's where they found the chicken, although not that year):

Those are AWESOME pictures. The collapsed log cabin is pretty cool. You think there was a termite problem there? And I can't believe your parents went into the leaning cabin. Is that called a lean-to?
