sorry, i realize it's still hideously hot inland -- but hopefully what starts here on the just-in-from-the-coast will make its way toward you sooner rather than later? in the hour that i've been home from work, the temperature's dropped nearly 10 degrees...

and here's a quick question: my SPPR Bella has been hanging out for several weeks with her 6-week-old birchen marans chicks in a pen of their own, and while she's a little bit less attentive than she was when they were littler, she still calls to them and hangs out with them most of the time. it would be handy, however, to have that pen free (possibly to house my newest broody & her eggs/chicks?), and i want to make sure her chicks integrate into my larger Herd of Chicks (they're a week younger than most of the others, but the same size) while they're still all young & relatively accepting of newcomers.

so, would it be okay to move her back to the layer flock & the chicks into integration mode? will either she or they freak out if separated? and if it's okay to separate them, is it something best done at night when they might not "notice" as much?

thanks for your thoughts!

I have running well water again!

Not a fuse at the well pump head, but something to do with the pressure tank valve something or 'nother. One of those "knowing where to hit it with a hammer" situations. No actual hammer involved...

The well pump guy is the same one who installed the new pump last year. He admired the major additions to the property and REALLY liked the new duck pond. He asked if I ever sold chickens, because his wife specifically asked him to ask me; she's thinking of "having a couple layers" for their grand-kids to enjoy "real eggs."

The misting system is running, the auto-waterer is back in action, and I will water the garden just before dark tonight. Poor tomato, lemon cucumber, and pea plants are shriveled IN JUST THE ONE DAY without morning soaker watering.

More huzahs!

Flies have been horrible this year. Never have I had so many flies. I need to get some fly traps, but I need to make sure they don't attract my honey bees.
I subscribe to Fresh Eggs Daily and she posted today about getting a bottle of Chardonnay and 1 mango. You drink all the wine except leave about 3 inches in the bottom. Peel the mango and drop some of the peels into the bottle. Then set the bottle where you see fruit or house flies congregating. That's all. www.fresh-eggs-daily.com I have to have my hubby drink the wine as I don't drink. Comments say you can use other fruit if it has a high sugar content.

You could move her into the grow out pen and she will return to the layer pen when she is ready, or seperate. Either will be fine. The babies might be dramatic but should be fine.

My turkey baby pretty thang and her breese brother still hang out with pumpkins and cry when she dosen't reply. They are like 3 months old and still whiney, most chickens have kicked everyone to the curb by then. 6 weeks is a lot of time with mum.

i can't put her in the grow-out pen with the other chicks, she picks on them a bit -- not horrible, but more than seems advisable. perhaps i'll try separating & see what they do...

Huzzah! Its still going up here.
( once it is not too hot, I have to share my chickens tory your amazing one reminded me of!)

Supposed to be cooler tomorrow, right?

My poor sereamas I think have friend their eggs. The eggs i started taking away from nutmeg since she was stealing all the new eggs are hatching. Ill give them those chicks in a few days, it will be a VERY staggerd hatch.

I could not wait to see the duckling again, so here is a picture . They are in a filing cabinet the silkies think is the ultamite brooder.

Here is a bunch of birds set on the same day, but differnt ages ( turkey quail chickens etc..)
