Yep! X2.

We all like to discuss and disagree here. Its the internet so things come off as harsher then intended but on this page you can usually say things are not ment to be obnoxious.

It is interesting to see that the wildlife people like white. I did not know that.

I bought a bunny run I'm converting to a chicken run yesterday from a guy in Cupertino who is switching to chickens since coyotes eat the bunnies. He did not know hawks and owls would take chickens!

( and Ron mamma silkie has 2 fcbm chicks too they fit under her fine! The ones under the seramas however....)
Hi Chicken Tows!

Your post was fine! It may very well be true too. It is great to discuss the things we learn to see what others have experienced.

Thank you for the discussion starter!

Oh yum! Wildflour Bakery is our favorite! Their scones are sooooo good!

Wild Flour Bread is a destination alone! Have sticky bun bread to go with fresh eggs and sausage tomorrow morning. Will make another visit this afternoon but expect low inventory as drove by this morning and it was mobbed with autos and bikes.

I passed another interesting looking place this morning, Rose and Thorn. Looks like chickens are about. May stop by and check it out tomorrow.

I did not stop this morning as was making unplanned trip to vet hospital with our little 15 pound mutt. He picked a fight with our big dog. After putting up with him for the past 6 1/2 years, she bit him for the first time. He got only 3 minor punctures but enough damage to necessitate the vet bill. I wish that this taught him a lesson, but doubtful. Needless to say, this morning I was not in sightseeing mood.

The exotic bird guy just called. I questioned if the eggs were fertile (you know how some people think it's an egg, it could be a chick). He said "oh yes, they mate at least 3 times per day right there in front of everyone". He's going to save up any egg she lays over the next 15 days and send them home with me!

He said he didn't want to waste a fertile egg.

Me either!!!

I don't even care if I have to give them back, just the fun of trying to hatch a macaw! I'm looking forward to seeing what color they are tomorrow (the birds not the eggs, LOL)

i used to live just down the road from the Rose & Thorn -- they have lots of chickens, & are a sweet little store, and VERY nice/chatty owners!

ChickNmamma, please excuse me...I certainly was not trying to start stories. The local wildlife rescue told me that local predators do not go after white prey because it was an unnatural color for prey. This has also been my experience. I would hope to never give false witness. Again, please excuse me.

No excusing needed. I am sorry if you felt I was being critical of you, I was just trying to show that what may be true in one area may not be true in another. I usually try to put something about it being my experience instead of stating it as a fact. The statement you just made allows people to decide if it works for them and in their area.

Several local predators here do not care what color their prey is, they go by scent and actions. If it acts like prey they attack it, no matter the color. Mountain Lions will attack Joggers because they are running (prey actions) and I am sure the Joggers do not wear fawn brown clothing or smell remotely like a deer. I do know albinos do not last long in the wilds. Once a predator learns white is food they will eat is just as readily as anything else, and it is more easily seen than any other color. My mother looses her white chickens more often than her black ones. She is in New Mexico. She does loose some black ones too though. Owls don't seem to care about colors, but they find the white ones first.

My experience with white rabbits was a friend's pet rabbit that got out of its cage while its habitat was being cleaned. My friend put it outside to "enjoy the grass" under the cage but the latch was not put on right and it got out. First I tried to catch it but I couldn't. That rabbit hadn't been out of the cage for more than 3 minutes and I had gone back inside to get my friend's help to catch it. When we went back outside it was just in time to watch a hawk swoop out of the sky and carry it off ... No white prejudice there and truly unexpected as she lives on the outskirts of a big city.

As I try to say, your mileage may vary.

Great looking chicks Ron, but it looks like a couple of them got dirty. Were they shipped to you or did you pick them up from Megan? I need to get on the ball and order some soon.

I can't imagine trying to raise a Macaw baby. I saw someone bottle feeding a squab a couple of years ago, much more work than I am willing to take on right now. It would be exciting though.

they were still wet from hatching. They all look much better now. One of them had a red spot from absorbing the egg, so it spent the night in a tea cup with Vetricyn Gel on the spot. It is much better now and is eating and drinking. I am also giving that one some vitamins.

Or did you mean the Pita Pintas with the black spot?
