One of life's greatest joys: one of my young hens laid her first egg! It is SO cute and a little bit unexpected, coming from a 5-month old Sebright! I walked out into the backyard and only 3 of the chickens ran up begging for treats, and it was the most food-motivated hen that was missing! Then I heard a shuflling in the nestbox and saw Ashe sitting in there in the middle of the day, panting and throwing her hay around. I left her in peace for 30 minutes and when I came back, she was having a dustbath in the flower garden and there was the most adorable egg in the nestbox! I took a picture of it next to the store bought egg that we just picked up this afternoon...but I suspect I won't regret buying them, with only 3 tiny Sebright hens and only 1 having laid anything.

Eric asked me what I wanted for dinner, I told him ice cream!

We're watching the Giants game off and on, everyone on TV looks comfortable. Hope it's as nice when we come down for the game in August. Kind of our 21st legal anniversary trip.

Very nice looking 1st egg. We've had bantams for 4 years now and I still can't bring myself to crack them. It doesn't bother me to sell them though.

I love the tiny eggs. One of my Wyandottes laid her first egg this week. She's been laying in a box full of candy, in the garage. I was a little worried at first, when it had brown splotches all over it. Turn out that in her nest making she broke open a chocolate bar....

Congratulations!

I have extra eggs and work in Davis. Do you buy eggs from a local farm or backyard chicken person? Send a PM if interested.

Congratulations on the anniversary!

Hi ya'll,
I live in pilot hill near cool. I was wondering about the chicken/farm animal swap in Roseville. How do I find out about these things? I would love to get some more chickens since I have lost 10 in the last couple of months to predators. Thankfully, we had a trapper come and captured a bobcat, skunk, and hawk that were taking my girls. Anyway, long story short: I would live to get a blue copper Maran or two and a laced wydonette. If any one in the foothills wants to get rid of some chickens.
