California - Northern

Mine are not lap chickens, but I've never had a mean wellie.

Nice! Blue and green eggs are so difficult to photograph.

I really like all the colors I am getting. I have two Crele Penedesencas that should start laying soon.

The Blue Egg Layers laid 3 eggs today. I have 4 of them, so 3 are laying for sure!

thanks! one had a small crack in it from shipping, so I opened it up -- it's on the left, one of my girls' eggs is on the right:

i realize it's probably difficult to free-range chickens in texas in the summer (and perhaps a lot of breeders don't free-range?), but glad to see my girl's is so dark and plump by comparison!

i scrambled them with some leftover shrimp spread -- SO heavenly...

I am baking Angel Food Cake right now(about 30 min. to go in the oven). The recipe uses a doze egg whites so I had the opportunity to see a dozen egg yolks from my girls eggs today. They look nice for a Backyard flock without a pasture:

One of them looks almost as dark as the egg in your picture.

I will be making lemon curd soon.

and hey, in case anyone is a subscriber to Lucky Magazine (or, more likely, if you see if while standing in line at the grocery store check-out), flip to page 183 -- there's a photo of my garden, by me, that was approved for publication by none other than ANNA WINTOUR, the most witheringly-critical eye on the planet! it was taken before the coop was built, it would be off in the distance otherwise. (my sister is the beauty editor there, her column is on page 190.)
Laura, I forgot to congratulate you on this!!!

I've never seen that magazine. Fashion is not my thing but gardens I love. Is there any other way to see the photo?

thank you! fashion is not exactly my thing either, but my sister lives in that world and i get to occasionally visit it -- strange and fascinating. and yes, the photo is on-line here (actually just an iphone picture i snapped, before the chicken coup was built -- if this were taken now, the coop would be barely visible under the oaks...)

gorgeous. so many of your photos have an ethereal quality to them!

Lots of pretty eggs today, although I wonder about the hatching eggs color, looks similar in color to eggs sold in the grocery store. Hope the broody works her magic on them.

Hope Della get things straighten out and working right.

I'll be sharing the video with my kids soon.

did you mean my (broken) hatching egg's yolk? egg yolk color is determined by diet, not genetics -- and the eggs were shipped from texas, where they're in the middle of an insane drought, so i don't expect the breeder was free-ranging her flock; probably not much to free-range on. has nothing to do with the quality of the egg itself, i.e. the likelhood that it's fertile or viable.

although it's funny, i posted the same photo on instagram/facebook, and was surprised by how many people assumed the pale yolk color was due to being force-fed hormones or housed in a gigantic corporate chicken factory or etc. -- which it most definitely was not. we really DO need to learn more about what we eat -- in a good way, i love that my friends had such good intentions, but they didn't realize that not all insane food-production practices are visible in the end product... and that some rather benign issues ARE visible.

The float test came back negative, but they said their "solution" may not pick everything up. . We are tempted to send a sample to UCD to have them test it. Is it possible for her to have a full blown case of cocci and have a negative float test?

It's weird because I am pretty positive she has cocci, All the symptoms were spot on.. She has responded to corrid, and is eating (anything in sight!) and pooping normally today. We may turn her back into the flock tomorrow.

Thank you all soooo much for your help.

Yes, tests can come back negative.

If you send a sample to Davis, call them up to make sure the correct test is selected. They told me to get a sample from the flock in the morning--fresh from several chickens. I collected about half of a baggie full. They did not find worms but found a small amount of Cocci.

Keep treating them for the full course and then give them the half dose for five days.

It is good to hear she is better and eating again. The next milestone will be laying an egg.
