California - Northern

That is a very pretty place. It looks like it could have been on the coolish side for your vist. How far away is it? I suppose I could Google it, but I find that I rely on Googling things WAY too often.

What a cutie dog and I really wish I had some of my own eggs..... I even had a dream about eggs last night! Sick I know.

For this group it would be odd if you did not dream about eggs.

We take I-5 to Maxwel and head towards the Coast Range Mountains. We go past East Park Resavoir. The Road takes you to Stony Ford where the road comes to a T and then we head to the left fro about a 1/4 mile. There is a turn to take past the Ranger Station. The road snakes up the mountains with great views of the Valley. On a clear day you can see the Sutter Buttes. About 8 miles up, you come to an OHC park with lots of Quad runners and people wearing helmets. There is another up hill part past the Fouts springs Boys camp and up to the Deffy Glade, Snowy mountain trail head. It takes us about two hours to drive there and a half hour to hike into the creek.

The Creek is on the other side of lake Pillsberry over the Coast Range Mountains. Growing up in the 70's my family would camp at Letts Lake and we would head to the Creek to fish.

Well I wish I could chalk it up to getting ready to lay an egg, but this is a Welsummer we are talking about here. One of the biggest egg hold outs there is. 10-12 months usually. Slackers.

I guess I will have to pick the snot up and carry her around a while. Dumb bird. I call the two Welsummers the "mean girls". So far out of of 13 chickens I only have 4 names. The mean girls, Spike, and Fatty Patty (She is an Orp that runs up and down the run when she sees me coming) She will even jump off the roost at dusk to see if I brought any treats.

It is Summer, so your Wellsummer will probably not take a year to start. I would expect them to lay an egg between 25 and 30 weeks old.

They are all only about 15 weeks old so I will probably continue to dream about eggs. The dream was really silly too. I had gone in to a Denny's and asked for just a regular breakfast there. You know eggs, bacon, hash browns, etc. She told me they were out of eggs and that all of Northern California was out of eggs because of production problems of some sort! I thought to myself gosh I wish my chickens were laying eggs so I could at least have my breakfast!

We went to a place that is special to us yesterday. It is the South Fork of Stoney Creek in the Coast Range Mountains. We go there a couple of times a year to fish, collect Lady Bugs or to harvest some Bay leaves. Riley loves it up there! The first thing we did was harvest some Bay leaves. There a a lot of California Bay trees by the creek. My Middle Daughter is holding some Bay Leaves, Then of course Riley is watching and my Oldest Daughter was helping too. We like to just unwind at the creek. My Daughters find it to be a Spiritual and peaceful place. I like the quietness and seclusion of the place. The last person to check in at the trail head signed out the day before we were there. We rarely see anyone there. Enjoy the Scenery pictures. When we returned home, one of the Bresse I hatched laid her first egg! She is hanging out with the Australorps recovering from being scalped. I am moving them out today to a Tractor Grow out pen I am finishing. The egg is very nice for a first egg. The Bresse egg is the one on the right. The eggs are from left to right: Blue Marans, Splash Barneveldner and White Bresse first egg.
Beautiful pictures! I love family time memories. Thank you for sharing. Noticed you said " splash Barnie"! ??? May you post a picture? I can't even imagine... Can't stop thinking about it.

I have a picture of the pullet from a couple of months ago. I will work on getting a new picture of her today. The Cockerel is in Winters so I do not have any recent pictures of him.

That was before the Juvenile molt so she is much bigger and the feathers are nicer too now.

The thought of trying to get a chicken to roll over.. oooh - that is funny!

No - chicken submission is the squat. Put your hand on their back and push down. Hold them down until they stop struggling. Like you are a rooster and they are the hen and need to submit to you. You can pull on a few feathers near their heads if they try to bite you - not pull them out - just tug on them.

Roosters usually pick up the food and drop it a couple of times, they don't always hold it. Your fingers look like food - so if you hand feed be prepared for the stupider ones to try and eat your fingers... If your fingers looked and were as tough as beaks I think it would be easier... Long fingernails maybe?

Thanks for the laugh!
