California - Northern

Ah, hahaha ! Yeah right.
Talk about opposite lifestyles! My boys wake me up at 5:30-6 and personal and chores for everyone are done by 8:30. School starts at 8:45 (we homeschool) and if we don't keep that schedule the hens will never get out of the coop because its crazy town after lunch !
Well... We live in the sierras ( Tahoe basin) and usually the mountain lions stay lower in the foothills BUT for a few years the coyote population was low Sooo the bunnys came back like gangbusters... Causing more healthy coyotes causing bobcats and mountain lions to move back in.

My point is -there is a cycle if life that transcends elevation and population levels! When food is available and homes disturbed there will be a shift from the normal FOR SURE.

I also may have been sensitive to lawatts choice of words as well BUT giving her the benefit of the double I believe her to be speaking personally?..... The list of predetors in our area seasonally is longer than most and many of them behave in contradiction to nature due to living side by side with man. We need to work together to have healthy happy pets and family. Stick around , we all need each other!

thanks -- i don't mean to have troubling choice of words, but i was a trained biologist in a former life (now more of a social scientist) and trying to just state ecological facts. what one DOES about those ecological facts is up to each individual, but the reality of where we live is what it is.

i live in northern mariposa co, sierra foot hills, above coulterville. i am looking for true heritage RIR and PRs.......prefer chicks, but would buy hatching eggs......anyone? thanks in advance!

Debs_Flock has Horstman RIRs. She lives fairly close to you. I do not think anyone has PRs but you may be happy with Silver Penciled Rocks? Those are around Northern CA.

Hello and Welcome to the Nor. Cal. thread and

There are a few who have the "Real" RIRs on this thread, Deb's Flocks is one as Ron said. I do not know about the PRs, I did get one SPPR egg from Wolftracks in Modesto and it hatched, cute chick.

Are you looking to buy them now, or in the Spring? A lot of people hatch chicks for Spring, I am not sure as much for Summer, that is the time they deal with the grow-outs and who to keep over winter and who to get rid of. I know that's how I do it, but I don't have the RIR or PRs.

for a Daisy Junior!

thanks! i just checked the nest box, after running errands all morning: one chick got halfway out of the shell but then stopped and has died, not sure who the mom was (one of the brown eggs that all look the same) -- but there's a damp-but-peeping Lucy Jr. out (a CL/SFH cross) and another pipping/zipping -- no visible action with the other eggs, but will give it time.

and welcome to BYC, liz conley! my hatching chicks are only mutts, so can't help you there...

I am toying with the idea of getting an order form Dick Horstman for live chicks next spring. If so, I want to get PRs and could share the order.

I did not have luck in getting PRs from shipped eggs this year. I did get two HRIS for myself and a trio? for Pet Rock.

lost another pullet to some sort of predator this morning, while they were out free-ranging first thing in the morning -- there's a pile of greyish feathers in my garden and an isbar missing. after losing an isbar/marans cross last week. i may have to stop letting them free-range for a while.

and that leaves me with only a trio of isbars, plus one isbar/marans. may have to get some more hatching eggs...
Sorry to hear about your birds. I am going crazy with hawks here. It is sooo aggravating. I have everyone on lock down and they are ******.

I finished the SG Dorking hatch and 7 hatched! All five that went to lockdown for one group(w26) and 2 out of five for another group(W33).

Hopefully the vigor of group W26 will be inherited by the chicks that hatched and next year the hatch rate will go up.

fabulous news! i hope my hatch goes as well as yours, but Amelia #2 is a new mom... clearly still getting the hang of it.

my Rcom has arrived, but i haven't unpacked it yet -- perhaps if i get some isbar eggs, they will get the first try with the incubator. (yes, Deann, i have one now! i'm truly in trouble!)
