California - Northern

it is so interesting to see the different replies people get from fish and game over this stuff! I may have gotten such.. vehement responses from them because we are in San Jose mebby?

I was told that bobcat would be removed or trapped in our area 95 minutes after hell froze over, and once hell had applied for the proper permits. They actually laughed when we asked about trapping, as if Id asked for a tax credit or something.

Clearly if you talk to other areas they find the idea less amusing and more feasible. The fact that you can call a trapper is awesome! around here they only issue permits one month a year, and never when they could have kits.

Government it, cant live with it, cant kill it...
Says it right on

Well I'm just south of mt Shasta in dunsmuir and last year my FBCM roo and New Hampshire roo got frostbite on their combs

so just wondering what everyone else does. They have brand new houses this year and I was considering a lamp when it gets in the single digits I just didn't want them to get dependent on the heat

Sorry to not get an answer for you about frostbite on combs. I do not have to worry about that here in Woodland but I have read discussions about it. In places where it gets pretty cold, they think keeping humidity down helps. I bet the better coops this winter will be all you need for them to protect their combs.

Wet combs that freeze get frostbite more than dry combs in cold weather.

Chickengirl1304, X-Dunsmuirite here. I get cold up here also but have never had a problem with frostbite. They make a thermostat you can plug your heatlamp into. It will come on a preset temps and shut off when it gets to 35°. They are used alot for heatwraped pipes, and are available with different presets.

Linda, great news on entering escrow! Replacing the gate will be easier than setting the posts and you can get one you like.

Good luck with the eggs, hope you get lots of girls with the new incubator. Has Ron rubbed it for luck?

Another heat hardy Blue egg layer is laying eggs!

Ron, are the blue egg layers a bigger bird than CL's? I love the size of my CL eggs but they are not very big birds so probably don't really qualify as a dual purpose breed.

So I just got home from wrk and went out to check on the Chickens and there was the bob cat, just lying there under my coop. The coop is raised off the ground. I turned the corner and there it was. It did not even move when It saw me and yelled at it. My husband got out the sling shot and shot some rocks at it. But this cat is getting way to brave. And now I am more concerned about my 7lb pom-tzu puppy than the chickens. Time to call the trapper again. Ugh!
get a air horn

The Pullets are not too big but the Cockerels seem bigger than CL's. Kim has the Boys so hopefully she will let us know how they compare to the Crele Penes that hatched with them.

The eggs get big fast though. Mine are laying eggs big enough for me to put into the for sale egg cartons already.

What kind of birds are you talking about?
