Finally getting my Blue Copper and Splash Marans eggs :) Really happy with these birds. (Marans egg in the middle, others for comparison). I have a nice rooster I kept, but yesterday he started limping bad. Don't know what happened.
No obvious injuries, doesn't look broke. I hope he heals well, because he is nice and had lovely leg feathering. Gave him 1/2 low dose aspirin but things don't look much better today.

Just curious what breeds everyone has? And do you heat your coops In the winter?

Black Copper Marans
Blue Copper Marans
Olive Egger
Easter Eggers
Polish
Ameraucana (roo only)

Nope, don't heat the coop (although I work hard to cool them in the summer) and I don't do extra light either. I think they need the break, personally.

Got a new lens today for my camera. The chickens were fun test subjects.

gorgeous new lens! i'm waiting for an adaptor to arrive that will let me use my dad's old (1960s-70s-era) Pentax lenses on my digital cam -- then will try them out on chickens...

and given our recent discussions of wildlife, i thought folks might be interested in this article, about how some species are changing/evolving from the experience of living in urban areas:

why thanks.
I will say though my U of A's like to fly. like Icelandics.
I need to finish covering there run before My Blue heat hardy eggers are dinner for something
My CL's and young Welsummers like to fly, also. I have a trio who want to sleep in the mulberry tree. We have to climb up on a ladder every night to get them. I was using a pole to get them to fly down but they fly clear across the yard and one of them landed on the back fence headed towards the neighbor's yard. I was also afraid that they would get hurt on the landing. They are already in the zone once they get up there. One of the CL's is so zoned out that she walks backwards when we put her in the coop!

If it's the same story I'm thinking of, it was a mountain lion. And the jogger lady bent over to pet the mama mountain lion babies. Natural selection for taking out the stupid people.

There was a mountain lion that attacked a dog last year 2 miles from our house. The dog was lucky and survived. The "officials" treed it and killed it though.
