California - Northern

well done! i've come home from work to discover a brown bat hanging on the bathroom wall, higher up than i can reach, even standing on a chair -- trying to figure out how to spin this one! (for now i just opened a window & closed the bathroom door & hope it figures it out...)

Oh man, a bat! I wouldn't of even entered the bathroom! You're brave. And you contemplated reaching for it ?!? Oh, there's no way... I probably would have tried to pull off the window screen and open it from the OUTSIDE of the house, lol! I just visualized this and got the creeps. If I had to go in the room I probably would have put a hoodie on covering every inch of my body in fear it will try to attack. Then I'd run to open the window, and fall somehow in the process. Kudos to you lawatt! That is not my calling :)

Uhhhh what are lemon eggs?

Our thread seems a little quiet the last couple days.... Or is it only me?

Is a book title. The peculiar sadness of lemon cake.
We go through quiet phases. I'm happy I'm out molting!

My 2 sick chickens are taking my internet time. We are also watching braking ad. I gave up on t in year 1 and decided to watch it now. Many hours are being wasted!
And yeahhhhh for funding!
Escrow in the most stressful time its almost over!

So I broke the "no quail in the chicken coop" news to my husband. He rolled his eyes and muttered something . Yeah that means I get a quail yard also!!! I think.

In the chicken yard, my pair from the trader joe fridge babies are growing out nicely. They are stuck together like glue and my daughters named them Jack and Jenny from some book series they read. Now how shall I get Jack on the table. The girls will cry and Jenny won't make it for long cause they're so close. Caught them walking plate today on the 6 foot fence . Sigh.

My olandsk dwarfs are looking like girls so far ( fingers crossed ) no advanced combs at all. I have never watched feathers grow in so beautifully! I really love these birds. If they are both pullets I will be needing to buy them a roo. Funny... Like I need another rooster.

And I have the mini running with quail and frizzled serama. Can't wait to see what I get ! Some of my quail eggs are greenish and some cream ish... It that a daily variance or do the golden lay a lighter shade?

Hope everyone is enjoying the clear air! I know we are! Now to get the pole saw and limb the trees in the "wild " portion of our yard.

I have a couple barnevelder boys that have to go this weekend. They have a horrible amount of tail fluff, and I found them ganging up on a hen trying to mate her. So they are outta here - I have the freezer space. That will leave me with 7 cockerels to choose from.

Linda - I love the name! You are so creative. I've tried to think of a name for my place, but I come up with lame stuff.

Just dont call it Lame stuff Ranch

Pirates are really in right now. I have a Jolly Roger from Disneyland hanging on my wall! Don't really understand the name. He looks pretty dead to me and not so Jolly....... Maybe the original was Roger and he was a Jolly fellow? Whatever, I suppose I could Google it but where is the fun in that?

I thought a Jolly Roger was a little square hard piece of candy

So I signed the papers for the loan yesterday. It should hopefully fund Friday, or Monday or Tuesday...or whenever they get around to it!

Not my dream house but still mine. Well mine and the banks.

Great news. its great owning. Congratulations. Can you move your coop easily or do you have to build a new one?

Rats! In Woodland we have trouble with them because of the fields and warehouses here....
arghhh. yes there are probably lots of those and field mice too. Hopefully the local hawks and owls will keep targeting them and not bycer's chickens

Was today candling day, Laura?

oh, i didn't realize there were particular days for that -- let's see, they were set on 8/27, so yesterday was day 10 i think -- is that a good time to candle? it was a LONG day at school yesterday, endless meetings, and i've got class this morning... only third week of the semester but it already feels like a long one.

quiet here due to crazy-busy at school -- the latest routine seems to be that i can't find time to eat lunch until about 4pm. and the chicklets are still staying mostly in their pens, to be on the safe side, and most of them are either broody-mamas or molting or both. i got zero eggs yesterday.

*congratulations*!!!!!! so exciting!! i still pinch myself over the fact that buying this house (my first) actually worked out two years ago -- i still can't believe it.

i actually like bats, they're so incredibly cool, and the little brown bats that we have around here don't hurt people at all, they're basically mice with wings who eat flying insects. all good in my book. but i couldn't reach it, it was up too high even standing on a chair -- but fortunately opening a window near dusk & closing the bathroom door worked, even though the window isn't all that large, its echo-location helped it find its way out within a half-hour or so of the sun going down. they're amazing creatures.

You can candle any time you want to, but the days on the chart above are recommended for checking air cell development. Based on development, humidity is adjusted up or down.

Also, air cell development happens when the egg is developing so with dark eggs you can tell if there is a chick growing inside the egg.

I've been found sitting outside watching the bats hunt at dusk. We have found a few hiding during the day and they have such amazing fur when you can actually see it in the daylight. At times we get shadow puppet show on a wall outside the living room, the bats hunt bugs drawn by the porch light. I've been buzzed a few times but since I'm a favorite food source for mosquitoes I'm OK with that.
