California - Northern

Not to push you in that direction, but I've processed quite a few different breeds and the marans have been the tastiest.

Although in the last week we've eaten a polish and a legbar, both great!

Sorry to anyone that doesn't believe in processing their birds, I don't mean to offend

I've read that! it's part of what has me curious... (and apologies re: processing also)

I have a couple barnevelder boys that have to go this weekend. They have a horrible amount of tail fluff, and I found them ganging up on a hen trying to mate her. So they are outta here - I have the freezer space. That will leave me with 7 cockerels to choose from.

Linda - I love the name! You are so creative. I've tried to think of a name for my place, but I come up with lame stuff.

Thanks for the pics Candy! They're all great looking but I particularly like the cuckoo. Love the concentric rings on her beard.

Need to find a d'Anvers thread for lurking!

We got 4 Serama pullets at the end of July. They're so calm for such tiny little birds. Great fun and they don't take up much space at all.

They are so cute

The d'Anvers are small too, so take up less room, which means I can have more of them

Right now I think I have around 71 chickens

I post on the d'Anver thread all the time. The people on there are super nice! Aubery (Boggy Bottom Bantams) is real helpful, always answering everyone's questions. Not like most big time breeders who don't give you the time of day!

Cute little girls.

I love my serama, they are very friendly. In fact off the top of my head, I have three pens that are super friendly like that serama, silkies/showgirls and bantam Plymouth rocks. You walk into their pens and have to push the birds away with the side of your foot so you can walk. Then lean over and pick up anyone you want. You don't need a net and there is no catching involved, they just stand there to be picked up. And I have so many birds, it's not like I work with anyone in particular, these birds are just very friendly and tame. Very much people birds.

Deb if you have ANY of yours you want to sell I'd LOVE to come get one or some.... :)

I've gone and jinked myself again! Posted yesterday that my partridge rock broody had 2 eggs still developing under her, I thought they had quit earlier so I was happily surprised.

This morning 1 was gone, looked all over thinking it might have been knocked out of the box, moved to another box but no luck finding it or any trace of it. I don't know if it was eaten by a rat (found 2 yesterday evening in another coop) or one of the other hens did it.

My little OEGB is now sitting on the 3 eggs left from Megan. The rock broody looked so sad I just gave her some golf balls, I'll give her back the chicks when they hatch since she is good at raising them. She would not take the orange ball, the yellow and range balls were OK at least.

Rats! In Woodland we have trouble with them because of the fields and warehouses here....
