Some folks smash egg shells instead of using oyster shell calcium.

Since your girls are just now starting to lay, they don't really need it YET. No problem in the interim.
Ah, perhaps that explains why they are scattering it about. As for the smashed shells, I kept the first egg shell I accidentally smashed yesterday so I have a head start! So at what point do they actually require calcium?

hopeing good thoughts about meg. I have been worried about her in the fire.

I'm a little in shock here. Something ( dog? fox? weasel? ) got into my backyard while I was gone today between 10 ans 130.  it ran around and killed almost everything.   Louie 2 lived up to his dads  legacy and  was clearly in a fight with whatever it was, as well as  iggy. Orlando is missing, but  the girls he was most fond of, my easter eggers had been  rounded up onto the porch and are alive.  My ducks all have large wounds, a vet friend is coming around tonight to see if they will live or I need to put them down.

Only the breese that are completely contained AND covered were safe. Even the babies that were in  the basement area  that is part of the house were destroyed. So, it can and will climb 8 feet, is not afraid of humans and  killed for sport at literally high noon.  I cant cover  either of my silkie land coops, the area is  built with tree cover to keep them safe from hawks, but I could never make it so you could not climb it and jump in.  They made a play for the  full grown turkeys but did not get them, but were fast enough  they got birds that can and do fly  into the trees. Maybe a pack of fox or weasels? I  don't know.

I don't know if I'm cut out for this.  I just kept picking up fluffy bodies and saying i'm sorry... I'm still loosing it a bit when i type.

Oh no! I can't imagine how awful you must feel. I' m so sorry!

Chickenmamma welcome back! We missed you. Can't wait to see what you think of the genetics page.

Ali I missed that! Keys!! So exciting! I'm so happy you can turn the lace into your new dream house ;). The quail are all in impenetrable pens and are freaked out but fine.

Grandma I feed egg shells back to the girls they prefer that. They act more like they are treats then oyster shell.

Ron I thought you'd like to know floppy comb your marans hen is still down there sitting on eggs. She did not move in the entire thing....

Thanks C! I didn't feel right bringing it up because I felt so bad about your place.

You know if floppy comb didn't move that probably saved her in itself. Didn't trigger the prey drive in the dog. Plus there was a lot of commotion I am sure so she was over looked.

How did the ducks fare?

Congrats on keys in hand.  When can you move in?  Are you doing any work before you get in?  Good luck with the move.

I can move in right now. I am going to slowly move boxes and things on my lunch breaks. You know fill up the truck the night before and take it over there at lunch. At least that is the plan. I dislike moving to a large degree and I am trying to not take time off to get it done.

I will probably do the big move at the end of the month. Going down to see my mom this weekend. She is in a home so that takes pretty much the whole weekend as she is close to LA.

Oh and ummmm insomnia stinks. Just fYI.

Ali happy things happening to friends always makes ones burdens lighter. I am so happy for you you havehad a windy road and did a lot of work to get that place!

The ducks are inside pooping on my linolium. Number 2 ( I named them after Chinese specials) is breathing really hard and I'm worried about internal injuries from being shaked. But he can walk and does not seem that hurt so he might just be a whimp. Number 3 whom I was the most worried about is doing better she ate all the mealworms I put down for her.

I'm the most worried about livia drusa who had her tail 1/2 torn off. I'll have to watch it closely. He even had to put 2 sutures into her oil glands once it was torn. He raises game birds and the chicks scalp each other on occation while growing up so he is experienced at sutures!

My gosh, I'm so sorry to hear about all the losses Chiquta but am glad to hear that some are slowly staggering home. I lost all my flock (except my roo, Big Daddy) a couple of years ago. All 35 were in a pile inside the run and my rooster was out. As I walked up to the coop, Big Daddy came rung down to me...I was trying to figure out if I had missed locking him in the night before and then notice how quiet it was....not even the horses were making noise. I'll never forget the site of all my girls and baby chicks piled up like that. I've rarely named a chicken since. My heart goes out to you.

I hope everyone is safe from the fire near the Redding, it sounds pretty nasty and fast growing.

Is it wrong to be happy someone is up posting this late? Its usually just me, here by myself! Insomnia Queen! I took a sleeping pill 2 hours ago and I'm not even beginning to feel sleepy! Although I've posted more then one Ambien post over the years! :0

Ali, congrats on the new house! How exiting for you!

Linda, love the new farms name and congrats on the ability to have roosters again. I know how much you love the boys! If you're looking for BCM, I have some beautiful boys from very dark eggs.

Speaking of roosters, I have a question....I have a beatiful OE cockerel. He's blue like my OE pullet from the same hatch (Blue Copper Marans/Ameraucana). Since the OE's beautiful olive egg doesn't get passed on then what is the benefit to having an OE roo?

Gosh I've missed everyone. I'm having girl stuff surgery next week so I'll be moving into this thread for my recovery! Be forewarned!

What is it with the fires?? It didn't seem so wet we should have a ton of underbrush.

My vet friend has sutured up 2 hens and one rooster ( he died right after could not walk so I figured he only had a slim chance anyway) and went to get more sutures for new girl who's tail is almost severed. This poultry pain spray I have is amazing. They are staying still for the sutures.
Tomorrow I am getting vetrynican spray and penicillin for the survivors. Ebony showed up too now.

He thinks I looks like it was a 40-50 lb dog from the wounds. I bet someone dumped one on the street today.
Thank you all for your generous offers. We are gong to build covered pens this weekend and see how safe we can make things. Then I will go from there because I never want to see that again!!!
I would use 6 foot no climb and heavy gauge poultry netting on top.

Ha ha! That would be funny to see.

I can off topic you too! I got the keys to the house today. Finally. Whew! And I hear the government changed the rules today for certain loans and you don't have to wait the two-three years after a foreclosure or short sale to buy again.
great news on that. are you moving right away?
