California - Northern

He is so cute!!! We were thinking about making a day trip up to your area to visit friends but I think not if it is raining. Is it supposed to rain all day in your area?

I dont think so. there is another band that may come in later. It would be a good day to go to Apple Hill if it is though as it would not be as busy

Good day all! I am in the Sierra foothills. Specifically North Auburn. Highway 50 is my families line between north and central California. Up here we have to prepare our livestock for the on coming weather the day before. That includes my 4 ducks and 15 chickens. Because I don't wantto loose any of my livestock this winter and this being my first time owning ducks will they be OK with snow cold temps?

Hi and Welcome from Woodland!

SuperChemicalGirl has Ducks in Maine and it is very cold there. I do not have Ducks but others near you do so they will give you tips.

Hello and Welcome to the Nor Cal thread! I live at about 2000 feet, just above Jackson CA and I don't worry about my ducks or chickens in the snow. I lived in Massachusetts when I was little and I remember ducks and geese out digging in the snow for food - we are talking about 3 foot + snow drifts that don't go away all winter and some 0 degree days and frozen water that we had to break to let them drink every morning that was frozen again by nightfall. I am pretty sure yours will be fine without any extra fuss - as long as they have a dry, draft-free place to hang out when it gets cooler.

Thank you for the info! Hmmm...to go or not to go?! Do I stay home and work or take off for the day and play?

Welcome! I love the sierra foothills its beautiful.
From my understanding of ducks they are OK as long as they are safe from the wind. But they do still need water deep enough to clean their mareks and make slushy messes.

Duck fact: ducks only sleep for short periods of time because they need to be able to agitate the water in their pond so it does not freeze.
