California - Northern

Hi Everyone,
I took these early this morning of my Blue Copper and Splash Marans.
I posted these on Marans thread hoping for input on type and quality. I'm hoping maybe someone here can help as well. The roo is tailless due to feather picking from the flock and I gave up on separating him to grow back. I love how stout and big the Blues are. My Splashes aren't as chunky, but they were all born this past April. The roo and half his girls have wonderful toe feathering. The other half is more sparse. Some of the hens have possibly a little eye leakage. Not sure how big of a fault that is.They are enjoying their "Peaceful Valley Chicken Forage" area :)

They are very nice looking!

You need to get a copy of of the SOP(Are Blues in it?) and check closely to compare.

The pictures do not show the combs or feet well enough to look for problems there. They look good from what I see--comb sprigs and correct feathers on their feet.

So I am still wondering how do you pronounce "Cochin" Is it Co Chin, Co Shin, Co Cheen, or some other way? I still have to say "Pen in duh sinka" to myself

I'm almost positive it is Co-chin.

Deb, a guy named John Moorehead may be contacting you re Icelandics. I gave him my two boys and he likes them and thinks he would like to work with them. I gave him your BYC user name.

I think my Icelandics are cool looking but am not such a big fan of their personalities. I may sell him my two girls unless starting to lay makes them more tractable. Maybe I am overly demanding or perhaps insecure

but I would rather have girls whose interactions with me weren't limited to attempting to run away. Even Willa my OE who was so skittish for so long will now eat from my hand and peck at my toenails but both Rue and Hattie stay on the outside of the hen circle and don't come forward at all when I am giving them treats. Not deciding on their fate till spring but I would rather get my white eggs from more California Greys and Dorkings. Those girls are sweet hearts.

Penedesenca is a Spanish word:
The pronuciation I found is: pay-neigh-day-senka

Thank you Ron :) I looked for Blues, but had a hard time finding it. I looked at Black Copper SOP though. Some of the statements I'm not quite sure about. For instance my rooster's hackle feathers. Would they be considered the wrong color? I will try to get better pics of feet/combs sometime soon. The feathering on the feet on the roo goes all the way down to the outside toe. No inside toe feathering, although in one pic the pullets long feathers may have looked like it. So hard to get good shots of what you want. They are always wanting to move :) Thank you Ron, I appreciate your input.

I would check the Marans Club for a draft standard for the Blue Copper Marans. The color on the neck will likely not be the same as for a FBCM.

WOW!

Now I really can't wait for Ellie and Hershey to lay their first eggs! I love the brown and blue. And I just realized if I mate Emmet with Hershey I'll get OE's..... bloody chicken math!

Yes, you can make your own OEs

The darker blue egg in the picture is from a half sister to Ellie.

So the day before yesterday we got a surprise egg from Olive our OE. The next day they were back to normal.

Normal size versus crazy small egg

On a more normal normal note, we got our third egg! I believe the is our golden laced wyandotte.

from left to right- Brahma egg, OE egg, Wyandotte egg.
