California - Northern

They are 1 gen removed from crazypetladys birds. She has like 20 pair of them so I don't know more then that.

Thanks for the info. I willl consider them a Chiquita special! I have the winter to see If I can get my husband to fall in love with them then hopefully i can get them integrated with my layers coop. Idk though our average winter temp is 10-20. Of course nights under 25 the red light comes on.

hi Petrock, do you offer the processing workshop often? Would love to do it ,but this weekend isn't good for me. I had them done the last few times and I'd like to learn it better. Only did it myself once, hoping it gets easier as you do it more.

My friend is planning on processing turkeys in November. We will probably have some chickens to do then, also. The first of our Bresse should be ready by then. I'll post the date when it gets closer. I like processing with them because her husband does the killing.

Any reason? Like there's a predator around or impressing sleeping hens or just cuz he can?

Danny boy crowd when he wakes up a couple of times... Around 330 or 4. Then at first light whenever that is . then when everyone else wakes up. But he has been sleeping under in of the new girls and that seems to be keeping him quiet. Such a baby.

Some roosters just wake up and crow. Some sleep through the night. Three cheers for deep sleeping roos!

My dominant rooster, Carl, used to crow every time I went to the bathroom in the middle of the night, until I realized he crowed when I turned on the light, but not when I managed to make it there in the dark. So I have the charger for the electronic pet door plugged in as a low light source. Plus one of those battery-operated "flameless candles" automatically comes on for five hours every evening AND it's a cool decorative touch. Anyway, I can now go potty without the rooster waking up my neighbors at the same time.

However, for quite a long time - weeks and weeks - Carl, would crow very close to midnight. Awakening the neighbor, of course. Coincidentally, the complaining neighbor's motion-activated security lights would illuminate the area under his deck and adjacent to the fence between our properties.

I did suggest he should blame the critters using the natural corridor for waking him up, as Carl was only responding to HIS sudden bright light and the rustling in the bushes across my gully.

Over the months, the critters have changed their scheduled passes ony a few times. Couple of irregular times related to deer and/or dogs, as far as I can tell. But the skunks and foxes definitely synchronize their watches. ;)

Candled eggs this evening....(day 14). All seem to be doing well....but looks like 1 of the Bresse eggs is clear, or possibly a very early quitter.. I think there may be slight veining but I am so new I am not ready to make that call yet. So for now I am leaving it....I am pretty sure ill end up throwing it out on day 18.

Dang those marans eggs are super hard to candle! I couldn't see anything at all in one of them other than some very slight movement.....so guessing it's doing well.

I was amazed at how active they all were. so cool....I think I was more excited to see them moving than my daughter was!

As of now we are on schedule for a hatch on the 2nd of October.

I have two Serama cockerels that I bring in every night in a cat carrier, if not they start crowing at 3 or 4 am and I'm not supposed to have roosters lol! If I keep them inside they don't start until 7 am haha.

My early risers are the quail. I don't consider them crowers since they aren't loud enough to wake up DH. It's all relative since the dogs have had me up since 3:30 this morning. So far no rooster crows but they should be starting any minute.

Rup rup! Ya quail wake at any noise. If its the wind or weather they seem to feel the need to crow at it. I love the sound however it is very mellow.

If you have a minute this weekend I would love to come see your pens if that's ok? Did you ever find a home for those beautiful
Mille fluer pair?

One day this weekend we are going to Lodi for the passport festival, hopefully seeing miss molly to pick up a jubilee roo and pick up feed. Do not know what day yet have to check with miss m. The pens are not really up yet but we would love to see you!

The MF pair is broken up right now. My hen made it through the attack and is my only non breese girl laying. The roo is at a friends house as "the rooster" but I'm sure I could convince him to take another roo instead. He is so perfect I could not bring myself to eat him.

I'm excited to hear the eggs are doing so well! Floppy I think is just too big to sit on eggs. She breaks a few and then the rest go bad. But she is a great mum so I gave her chicks, and they are so happy with her.
