Having a lot of knowledge has never stopped me!

How old is she? The newsletter I posted yesterday had information about Black Head, which is similar to coci.

There were symptoms listed in the article. UCD says they have been seeing more Black Head cases lately. I would keep up with the corid and see how she does.
Little Miss Cupcake is 3 years old. I'm in the process of setting her up in isolation. Unfortunately she will be sharing the garage with the pigeons and their 5 day old chick. Since she's not eating much it's proving difficult to collect anything from her. I'll probably take what I get in to Dr. Heidi and have her see what's there if anything. Since I just lost my partridge rock bantam I'm a little antsy!

So i have 2 (one being the mama squished one, the other just hatched ) chicks that have the umbilical cords still attached to egg shell. There is no yolk, and they look to be drying up. I have them both in tea cups. Do i let them drag them off, leave them in the cups till they fall off, or clip them. Looking it up there seems to be differences in opinion on what to do. I would like to get the marans (squished chick) out of the cup ASAP to move around and straighten out her little legs.

Welcome Kikwi and Cackle Joy!

When I read the beautiful breeds you have I suspected they were from some of the fine people here.

I find this thread to be the friendliest, full of practical knowledge and most enabling.

Is she losing a lot of weight?

Reproductive cancers happen at 3 years old.

Let us know what the Dr. says.

I leave them alone. I spray the navel with vetricyn--Bacteria can get them if the naval is gooey.

Clipping can cause them to bleed sometimes.

I hope they do well and the rest hatch for you!

So should i just let them drag it off instead of keeping them in cups?

Stats so far are:
1 marans hatched
3 bresse hatched

2 pipped bresse
1 marans without a pip

I keep them in the cup until the yolk is absorbed then take them out of the cup.

Bresse are tough little guys so they will likely be fine.

I agree with Ron on this. All the Bresse that I have hatched have been good little hatchers. I've only had to help a couple of them and only one of them ended up with toe problems. I had another one that hatched and then had her eyes start to go back into her head. I kept putting on Vetericyn eye gell on her eyes several times a day. I worried for a while that she was going to be blind based on how she was behaving but after a few weeks, she stopped shadowing the other chicks and began responding to things she could see. She was much smaller than the rest of her brooder mates and still is slightly smaller at around 14 weeks. I may have to find a good home for her if she stays smaller.

Hi everyone! Just found this thread. I grew up in Sactown, now in Oakland. Got my first chicks in June, and I'm hooked. They're a flock of 5 birds: welsummer, orpington, basque, swedish flower, and cream legbar, all from juststruttin.

Here they are at about 12-13 weeks. So far, it looks like I have all girls!

And here they are in their run, which encloses this crazy sideways acacia tree they like to walk on. This tree is awesome -- it drops seeds they like to eat and seed pods which become more litter!

Can't wait for that first egg... Anyhow, hi everyone!

Hello and Welcome to the Nor Cal thread! Beautiful girls you have there, they look like they are very happy.

You are funny! I'm in the Central Valley. Hmm, maybe that qualifies as the Mason Dixon Line of CA! Technically we are about 2 hrs north of the absolute middle. You know where the Redwood Tree and Palm Tree are on Hywy 99?

Regarding chickens, we have have several rare breeds. I'm looking for more Dark Brahma's. I only have one pullet and a very randy rooster. I'd like to take the pressure off of her. Right now they are separated but eventually I want to breed them. They are very hard to find. Do you happen to know of any in your area?
Hello also and Welcome. I think Nor Cal is a state of mind, instead of a location. If you think you are in Nor. Cal., then you probably are

Quote: A cup is also good to strengthen and straighten out their legs, so I would leave them in for awhile longer, just take them out once their umbilical cord is off and give them some water and food. I never liked them dragging their umbilical off as it can get caught and pull stuff back out - not good... Usually the chick has twisted it off in the egg before they get their legs co-ordinated and kick their way out. You are just using the cup like an egg to help them. Once they can stand up in the cup then I would take them out.

About the hen's action - I think I forgot what type she is. I have a Sumatra that will kill any chick that isn't black - and I do mean anything. I had her and my Blue Silkie on Phoenix eggs, she killed every chick that hatched. I took the Silkie away with the rest of the eggs - the Silkie hatched out three more and they are fine. Some birds do not like the "wrong" colors, some birds don't care. My Blue Silkie will hatch anything, the Partridge Silkie only wants Partridge, the other Blue Silkie does not like Extended Black (Penguin) but is fine with all the other colors.

Does she have any chicks under her right now - and what color does she have?

So far so good. She was not ready to hatch, so most definitely squished by mama. Last night, after peeling some shell off the membrane I could see her umbilical cord was still attached. So I stuck her in a soup mug to finish off. This morning it has almost detached and she is peepin very loudly and moving around quite a bit, so I am taking this as a good sign. I also gave her a little drop of poly-vi-sol on her beak last night to give her a little extra oomph.

We have cats, and I was very worried about the safety of the brooder box with no lid, so I stuck the other one that hatched in the incubator last night, since it has a lid. I will get some pictures today.

I cannot believe she kicked 2 babies out of the nest. The first one she actually picked up by the toe and tossed to the corner after I tried to stick it back under her.

We have 3 more bresse pips. I am a bit worried, as at least one of those pips was there yesterday afternoon, and there has been no more progress since. I guess we will see what happens.

Thanks for the update do the cats have access to the room where the squished shell baby is?
