California - Northern

OK, all you folks with much more knowledge than me, I've got a d'anver hen that is acting off. She usually the first to meet me in the morning but she's hanging back and hunched up. She's loosing weight and hiding under the ramp. I gave her mealworms, grit, oyster shell, crumbles, and she rejected them all until I gave her a cucumber. I started them all on corid yesterday, anything else I should be doing?
How old is she? Corid is a good start, especially if she's young.

Hi everyone! Just found this thread. I grew up in Sactown, now in Oakland. Got my first chicks in June, and I'm hooked. They're a flock of 5 birds: welsummer, orpington, basque, swedish flower, and cream legbar, all from juststruttin.

Here they are at about 12-13 weeks. So far, it looks like I have all girls!

And here they are in their run, which encloses this crazy sideways acacia tree they like to walk on. This tree is awesome -- it drops seeds they like to eat and seed pods which become more litter!

Can't wait for that first egg... Anyhow, hi everyone!

Welcome! Nice looking flock and a very cool run.

You are funny! I'm in the Central Valley. Hmm, maybe that qualifies as the Mason Dixon Line of CA! Technically we are about 2 hrs north of the absolute middle. You know where the Redwood Tree and Palm Tree are on Hywy 99?

Regarding chickens, we have have several rare breeds. I'm looking for more Dark Brahma's. I only have one pullet and a very randy rooster. I'd like to take the pressure off of her. Right now they are separated but eventually I want to breed them. They are very hard to find. Do you happen to know of any in your area?
Welcome! Not local, but Carol (Fowl Visions) has nice Dark Brahmas. I do know she ships hatching eggs.

So i have 2 (one being the mama squished one, the other just hatched ) chicks that have the umbilical cords still attached to egg shell. There is no yolk, and they look to be drying up. I have them both in tea cups. Do i let them drag them off, leave them in the cups till they fall off, or clip them. Looking it up there seems to be differences in opinion on what to do. I would like to get the marans (squished chick) out of the cup ASAP to move around and straighten out her little legs.
I'd let it dry up on it's own. I have had a chick tear itself open by dragging it's umbilical, so I'd leave it in the cup.

Sold our Splash OE rooster! We give him to his new dad tomorrow. I'm actually really sad. We've been back and forth wether or not to keep him or our English Orpington rooster.

Sold him dirt cheap, but at least I know he'll have 16 hens (instead of sharing 6 with 2 other roos) and he'll be local. Although I hope he lives a long life to enjoy him, the guys last rooster (who he said didn't even crow) got eaten defending the flock.

I have to not worry about them not making it. It is hard though. I tell myself that they had a great life even if it was short and the Bob Cat has them for lunch.
Thanks to everyone who commented about my pics, love hearing any kind of feedback

Your pictures are great!

I wonder which month will have one of your pictures on it for the 2014 calendar.....

I bet your little one in the cup will be able to join the ones in the bator by this evening. I made a lame but effective lid for my brooder by just folding a piece of hardware cloth over the top like it was foil. I used big binder clips to secure it but you cold also use bungee cords or something like that.

Congrats on the hatch...too bad mama was a better setter than mom.

Speaking of broodies I am a little worried about my hatching eggs with the gov. shut down. Hope the USPS is isn't short handed or anything that will delay them. They are supposed to be here Thurs. Friday at the latest,

Here is the parent flock:

Beautiful. That is one of my favorite colors. I also love the partridge.

I would try to pick most of the shell of exept the part where the umbilical cord directly connects so they can maybe move around a bit

Yes they can see them. They use a Microsope.

An Envelope will work too. It will get to them quick enough and it is not too hot weather wise so you likely do not need the ice pack.

So it seems like this is the right reference to the test here, last one on the bottom.

Sorry to be so slow at this but there are a lot of moving parts to this process. I would need to fill out the following form:

http://www.cahfs.ucdavis.edu/local-assets/pdfs/StandardSubmissionForm_6-13.pdf

To the following address?

Central Reference Laboratory
CAHFS - Receiving
UC Davis
620 W. Health Sciences Drive
Davis, CA 95616

Is that the correct address? I know you have posted it before but I couldn't find it in the millions of posts on this thread and I am just challenged enough I couldn't get Drop Box to work!
