We are a busy thread for sure!

Is it windy where you live? It is very windy here in Davis.

Yes it's windy and humid here in Redding which is making it difficult to get the humidity right for my hatching chicks. I have 2 that have externally piped and one working on the external pip. It's my first time hatching eggs so I'm a nervous mamma!

Squishy is doing well today. The leg seems to be moving back under her. After further inspection it seems that the small outer toe is fused to the middle toe. I don't want to separate them, as she just went through quite the ordeal. I will leave that to Shantih, as they will be heading down there tomorrow.

I attempted to tuck one under mom this morning, she attacked it before I could get it out of my hand. She never attacks our hands and will let us pull eggs out without any issues....so I am pretty sure she did not feel threatened by me.
She was a great broody, just not such a great mom.

We are leaving this weekend, and I guess we will have to build a broody breaker to get her off of the nest when we get back.

We still have one unhatched egg. It is a marans...it is the one egg I could not see in when candling. It is still in the bator. I am.hoping it hatches today, otherwise my pet sitter could have quite the surprise over the weekend.

Try using a cool mist humidifier in the room with the incubator.

10% humidity today--See why we cannot really dry hatch here?

I put that its humid here but its not. According to weather bug were at 29% humidity. I finally have my incubator at 71% and Im happy with that. I have a question for you though. An egg was starting to internally pip around midnight-1 am and hasn't made much progress, is that okay? Also, another internally piped last night and hasn't piped at all externally. They are on day 22. What do you or anyone else think? I'm a newbie at hatching.

Internal pip(through membrane in shell) happens a day or two before external pip(through outside shell--you see a hole). External pip happens up to 24 hours before the chick zips and hatches.

Turn the heat up half a degree for the next hatch. A lot of us hatching addicts like to run a bit over the 99.5 temp for hatching.

The pip equals progress. They should hatch fine but watch them for stickiness and yolks that do not absorb completely.

I hope they all hatch well for you!

And ask any question you have. Someone here will help you.

I had to open this one up because my hubby and I thought it had internally piped on day 19(we heard chirping). A moderator said they have 24 hrs of oxygen in their air cell and recommended opening a breathing hole because it had been over 24 hrs. I had a hard time locating the beak, that's why the hole is so big. The chick is doing fine but I am not sure it's going to he able to hatch itself because of the hole. Will s/he be able to get out on its own? It had not internally piped until about 1 am. I have seen her picking at the edge of the shell but nothing else. She chirps every now and then. Thanks for any advice!

I'm not one that helps chicks out unless they get stuck while zipping. But I don't think that chick is going to be able to get out on it's own with that hole. It doesn't look like it will be able to turn to chip away at the shell with it's egg tooth. And it can't hatch like that, as it's curled up in the egg in hatching position. (no way for it to uncurl like that)

I would probably start chipping pieces around the hole away. If you see any blood, stop - it's not ready to hatch.

Yes, it needs some help. It will dry out too quickly with that big of a hole.

Check my signature with instructions on assisted hatching. The hardest thing to learn with hatching is to not touch the eggs unless it is necessary.

I have studied Sally Sunshine's when to assist. She told me to use ointment to moisten the membrane which I did that as well as a little water with a q-tip but not too close to the beak. I can see the main vein still but not as prominently as it was. When I can't see any veins any more I will be back asking questions I'm sure ;-) She internally piped about 12 hrs ago.
