You have moved, so the soil ( even if they are not on soil, there are flies etc) is new to them. Corid is a good idea for a just in case. Corid just stops them from absorbing a b ( the corid organism needs a lot of it) so its not a big deal short term.

I dont think that would be the loosing weight, myself, but I would still do it. I would feel the crops at night and see if they are eating ( but still loosing weight) or maybe just freaked out and off their feed.

I would also see if she will eat yogurt or give her probiotics. It should help increase the good bacteria in her gut

I have had odd deaths close together.. but it was in the heat of summer. We live in a heat pocket I swear. But just to be safe I cleaned my coop and sprayed watered down bleach on everything then after that aired out. I spray bleached the pen, waterers and feeders, then fed them all herb. things like tyme, and mullien. they are not fans of the mullien in large pieces so I ripped off small ones.

Its hard to loose the chickies. *hugs*

I lost my massive almost perfect confirmation buff hen early august :(

One? Ouch...

Pretty boys though.
There were two pullets but she was a cull and is now pet with two Pita Pinta pullets in Davis.

I was looking for a nice Cockerel to breed with the best of the ones that hatched this summer. I like the big one of the three here and I have another Basque Cockerel that is nice too from the first hatch. He is three weeks older.

I should have a great Third breeding season with the Basque next year.

corid is very safe so when cocci is a possibility start the treatment but get the poo tested so that you know for sure. It could be worms that is the problem but watery poos and losing weight are not good symptoms.

specify on the test form that you want a test for coccidiosis along with worms.

It doesn't sound like cocci to me - but it does not harm them to treat them for it. It blocks niacin absorption but they are already finished growing most of their bones - so a short treatment won't hurt. Do not supplement with niacin because that would negate the treatment.

I think if you find its worms you can treat both at the same time, the medications do different things and do not block each other.

Personally I would have the test done first before starting any treatment. I had a few birds with super watery poop after I changed locations on them - just internal upset from that.

I would be more concerned, as you are, about the weight loss. If the bird has something internally wrong that would cause quick weight loss. Also, Polish are not strong birds, they prefer warm to cold, and if they aren't aggressive enough they might not be getting enough to eat. Remember, they are from the Mediterranean, think tropical climate! Perhaps make sure she has enough to eat, separate her for meal times if necessary so she can eat in peace? My ditz-head Mottled Houdan is an outsider for sure, she sleeps by herself - stays away from the other birds and is just generally unsociable. However, I do make sure she gets enough to eat once the rest of the flock have pigged out. Perhaps since they can't get out to range she can't get to whatever food is left?

My young chicken has died. This is the second this week. I do not know what is going on. Maybe it's my food fermenting. I held her a long time today. It is very sad. She had the same as my other girl, the diarrhea, the drinking of the water, and when they die they are stiff and on their side. I am so sad.

Well it seems that I am faced with this possibility too. Such a darn mystery.

Well tonight she didn't coop herself up. When I went to close them up I found her on the floor of the run. So I put her in a pet carrier and brought her inside. She is already zoned out for sleep even with bright kitchen lights. I got a couple of drops of the Corid water in her that I put out for the flock today. I don't know if she had any on her own. I did see her scratching around and picking at things like she was eating. When you put Corid out like that for the whole flock, how much should each one ideally drink?

I have been unpacking all day trying to get some things out of boxes so I haven't been able to watch her so closely.

Now I need to get the poo over to Davis as soon as I can. I am not that far from there. Ron, is it easy to take it in and drop it off? Where would I take it too? Do you have a street address? I have never been to Davis. I mean I have been IN Davis, just not to the college area.

I will see if I can go get some plain yogurt tomorrow and give it to her.

I have some Wazine here, but what is the best wormer? Ivermectin, or some of those other words I have heard floating around? Is it Valbazen? I don't mind getting some to have on hand. I may have to order it on line.

Thanks for all the ideas. She is going down hill kind of quickly. Obviously it started a few days ago but I didn't really see the change until this morning.

Thanks C - Well if she does die I definitely will. I hate mysteries.

Has anyone ever heard of or used this product?

It seems to treat a million different types of things. Not sure if that is always good, but if you are always guessing what the problem is a good ole ZAP everything is the American way..... Right?

Thank you for all the sympathy. I sure appreciate you. We just went ahead and buried her, threw out the fermentation, cleaned out the bedding, sealed off the area where the first one died. I will use full strength vinegar tomorrow and clean everything. I don't know who will go next. I can say next year when this is all cleared up I want more white Plymouth rocks. They are so sweet and gentle. I should not get so attached to them, but I have no other pets. We are trying to find a place to move also and having chickens is hard when renting. If I loose another I will definitely send her in, and I will probably be a wreck. This is getting hard to bear. Thank you again.
